Limitless
Maybe a noob question but does this need any servicing in the way of greasing? Thanks in advance.
SM25T
No. Sealed bearings. No rollers or balls. Grease would attract dirt to stick.
Area Representative Nick Chan Posted May 21, 2020 Area Representative Share Posted May 21, 2020 Its still an idea I believe to check them from time to time to make sure they move freely but as SM25T states, they are maintenance free.Nick
Bricol
And I'm stunned to still find both of mine are in good working order, 19 years and 50,000 miles on crap roads later in all weathers, with several years of no garaging . . .
Limitless
Thanks to all, I did wonder if they were sealed. It's a far cry from my old Triumph Spitfire trunnions...thank God!
Area Representative Geoff Brown Posted May 22, 2020 Area Representative Share Posted May 22, 2020 Just a regular external clean with a light application of WD40 (other similar products are available) to keep the crud down.Beware - they do wear but I think it is due to how the suspension is set up & the duress they come under - constant track driving etc.If all wheel bearing play has been eliminated the easiest way to check for wear - if you are nimble - is to raise the front of the car up, place one hand at the top of the tyre (12:00) & the other at the bottom (18:00) but with the palm far enough inboard for the middle finger to touch the bearing. Then try to move the wheel in & out vertically if there is any play your finger will know!Otherwise have an assistant 'wobble' the wheel while you inspect the bearing. Bricol
As an industrial specifier and user of such devices, this is pretty standard advice from suppliers of this type of bearing: Lubrication of Steel-On-PTFE Spherical Plain BearingsFor steel-on-PTFE lined (fabric or composite) spherical plain bearings, there should not be any additional lubrication added. Any lubrication of the sliding contact surfaces could disturb the internal self-lubricating properties and shorten bearing life. Therefore, lubrication of these bearings is not advisable.
