GRP tillets x 2

Where do you want to start with the weight saving?

You can cut out at least 3kgs of wires.

You can shorten a lot of the bolts

Change some of them with plastic, aluminium or titanium

Gundrill the upper steering column

Fit Mike Barnby wheels

Mill down the rear hubs between the studs to reduce the thickness.

Have made carbon wings / nose with fewer layers

Carbon / Kevlar Tillets

Nitrons are lighter than the Bilsteins

Aero wishbones weigh around 1.1kg less than non-aer

Carbon light blocks

I could go on (Having "adjusted" min to be a SillyLight - it comes in around 440kgs dry with a rear exit exhaust that came in at a penalty of 10kgs)

The lower part of the upper column is hollow already. This is to enable the lower part to slide in in the event of a collision.

Of course, you have to stop before the lock ring leaving some material.

It is a little boresome to do, but it saved 297g.

The steering wheel hasn't fallen off my car yet. I suppose it's done 7-10k miles like that.

(by the way: I have no boot floor either, nor have I a steering lock)

For what it's worth,

K series S3, weather equipment,no heater ,leather seats, powerspeed exhaust, 6 speed manual  ,weighed 560 kg with about 25 kg of fuel

R500D with  weather equipment ,heater ,leather seats and six speed manual weighed 580 kg ,again with about 25 kg of fuel .

Both weighed on same Trading Standards  certified weighbridge without driver .

As always more than Caterham would have you believe.

Is it the tow car that’s the issue? I know a few caravans (yes I know , I am sorry but I try talking to them they may convert) and they tell me that modern cars are making for poor towers because of weight restrictions.

You might have to change your tow car

For the record - those helpful people at PGM still had a record of the weight from 2012: 604 Kg with me.
Taking into account me, plus weight difference between SLR cage and the FIA bar + strut fitted in 2012, heavier exhaust, and some weight savings since then... I make it about 525!

*yes*
