Delbert
So having been completely bitten with the sprinting bug I have realised that FiFi is just not the ideal car to be throwing up hills . ( not unless there are a secret plethora of class 5 cars on the horizon ) as she is a fantastic car - superbly built one of those " no expense spared cars " so I am always too cautiousAdditionally when I was competing at the Saturday Curbourgh I was competing against 6 other cars and I rather liked the competition elementSo choices are join another club for additional sprintsorBuild Project Rat a competitive class 4 car ( power to weight rules out anything less than 210 bhpSo the first question in my mind is - what is the cheapest form of 210 BHP ? This will then sort of decide the restor should project Rat be a Fireblade engine - ???
Support Team Shaun_E Posted June 14, 2016 Support Team Share Posted June 14, 2016 Don't think you'll do it for cheaper than this: /forum/sale/1999-20-zetec-caterham-7-classic although the Duratec car he's also selling would be quicker.
Ivaan
What about an R1 installation. No dry sump.Plenty of engines about. 180 bhp sub 400 Kgs ( depending on chassis type )But you'll need a reverse to meet MSA rules Clive
Delbert
Shuan - I know and carbs as well - timing is a bit of an issuefancy building some of the vehicle as well - rather enjoyed the A35 project - Ivan , group 4 needs Fireblade or - extra scruitineering equals faffing about in my book - a one off is one thing but not if its every event etc
Mark Durrant
DelOne options is to buy an R400K which will be almost spot on 210bhp but then that is not much of a project. An alternative would be to by an SLR K, fit a set of TB's, an ECU and again achieve 210bhp.If I was in your position I would build a 210bhp Duratec using your existing T/B's, exhaust, ECU and install in your existing car. Dave J
power isn't all ...at curborough I did 56.99 with 247bhp and 57.99 with exactly the same car and set up but just 140bhp.
Comp Sec
Depending on Budget R400k is ideal or or for the budget conscious http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/caterham/all-models/caterham-raceline-r/5666256?v=cfor class 4, anywhere 190BHP to 210BHP will see you at the top of the current class on power, just comes down to the driver then..... Delbert
so having looked at the sensible engine change option I would need a gearbox change as well as FiFi has a well matched 5 speed that has a very long 1st and third ( can easily do the first 64ft without gear change hence those times at Curbourgh (2.33 on cold CR500s ) As I weigh rather more than the average bear is there a major weight difference in a K series and a Zetec / Duratec
Support Team Shaun_E Posted June 21, 2016 Support Team Share Posted June 21, 2016 K series will typically be a few kilos lighter depending on the spec of the engines.

Delbert
All I would need is £28k for mine :) ! and I would have enough for a Bongo Seems it is better to buy one already built based on the examples shown all of which could fit the remit Maybe its time to get the polish out
