mcerbm
I'm looking at reducing weight for competition and I'm going to remove the windscreen motor (2.2Kg).Any suggestions on where to get blanking grommets for the oval holes that the spindles poke through? I'm looking to keep the scuttle so any suggestions on blanking off (looks more professional than duct tape) are welcome.
Phil G
What you need is a second scuttle. http://www.lotus7.club/comment/2168296#comment-2168296Shameless promotion.
CharlesElliott
eBay, Car Builder Solutions, Polevolt.....there are loads of places that sell grommets.
mcerbm
all the ones I find are circular, the holes in the scuttle are oval. just interested if there is a neat solution?
CharlesElliott
I don't think the holes will be oval; there are black plastic covers over the spindles which are oval, but the actual holes in the scuttle once you get these off are round.
Drumster
Well, they were oval on my 1993 car and I just used a round grommet and put up with a small bulge in the grommet
revilla
On my SV, due to the angle the spindles pass through the panel, the holes were decidedly oval.
mcerbm
they are definitely oval on my car. Bulging grommet is best solution so far, any advances? I will probably try and cut the edges of a rubber blanking grommet to reduce bulge and see how that goes.
martyn
Some blanking grommets are supplied with the aeroscreen kit from caterham. I cant answer the round / oval question, but one would hope the supplied grommets would fit.
Mechanical Moz
https://minispares.com/product/Classic/Grilles_Brightwork/Wipers/Kits/8B12396.aspxStainless steel so perhaps not the look you're going for, could be painted though. In which case cheaper ones are probably available on eBay. Although the holes in the Mini scuttle must be round (or very close to) as they came with grommets as standard. Member Jonathan Kay Posted March 13, 2016 Member Share Posted March 13, 2016 I will probably try and cut the edges of a rubber blanking grommet to reduce bulge and see how that goes.Sounds right to me. Are you thinking of slicing into the groove on two opposing sides?Jonathan
Simon.Rogers
I'm just refitting a wiper assembly on an SV for a customer. Holes are round. I will swap you hard plastic type plugs/grommet for the outer 2 plastic chamfered sleeves and wiper nuts.Customer has lost the outer parts. I have the wipers. If anyone else has some sitting around can they let me know please.
Nigel Riches
Get a roll of speed tape, also known as 600mph tape, thinner, lighter than grommets and more aerodynamic, search on, Google should find some quickly. Nigel
Hanns Per
just did this after removing the wipers, the holes are oval (2001) . So I took a pc. of 1,5mm alu held it underneath the hole then I took a needle and marked the hole onto the alu I held underneath. Then I carefully cut out the marked alu piece and with some filing and sanding I got the exact shape of the hole. Then I put a tape underneath the hole in the scuttle and put the piece into the hole and glued it with superglue. Then I sanded it and polished it. So far it works
