Upgrading Power - Duratec R300

Recommended Posts

I have a 175 bhp Duratec Superlight R300. Three years on from the build, I am now looking to upgrade power.  Thinking of going for something along the lines of the Caterham 225 bhp upgrade with throttle bodies, injectors and cams.  I live in Scotland so would be getting Dreadnought in Callander to do the work given the cam change.  I wondered if anyone had experience of this mod, something similar or an alternative route to go down from this base engine ?  Thx.

Hello Phil,  I am to going down this route I have a 175 Roadsport 2012 Duratec and I'm waiting for CC to let me know when the parts are in, Hopefully mid Jan. I had a thread going not long ago. I'm going for the RBTB and cams fitted by CC  220 bhp. A friend had his done recently and is very pleased with how the car preforms,  I have had several comments of why am I getting CC to supply and fit, That's an easy one to answer for me a car with providence and approved parts . Those who have done the conversion are so positive about the change, I get the impression it's like putting the heart into the car, something I have thought missing to civilised.  Although with the high lift cams at low rpm can be a bit of a hand full.

Thx for reply John, I tracked down your thread and it is really helpful.  The Caterham option seem easier and lower risk but they are too far away to forget them to do the work.  Do you know if CC will remap the car after the fitting ?  Good luck with the work and enjoy ..... P

I had RBs fitted to my R400D at CC Crawley about a year ago and have to say I'm very pleased with the results.  The car remains entirely tractable at low speeds and goes like a scalded polecat when opened up.  And, yes, the upgrade involves a remap from MAP-based to TPS-based.  The unexpected bonus was that fuel consumption remained much the same.

I have also ordered the 175 to 220bhp upgrade from CC. This is proving to be very popular as John says I've heard some very good reviews from other members. CC performing the upgrade is a no brainer for me as the car is still under warranty.

I must have ordered mine about the same time as you John as I was told it would be about mid January time and that I was the seventh person to order the upgrade in the last week or so!

I can't wait to experience the difference and as an extra bonus the bonnet does not have to be cut (as mine is an SV) so I don't even have to tell Mrs Buds I'm having it done! *rofl*

There's not much to see under the front just a big sponge filter !. Sevens and classics have a white S3 for sale at the mo if you want a look on there web site . I don't know how you're going to explain the different sounds tho . Look for small town with a hill to coast down into the locals will be taking cover . Can't wait !! Big kid  lol.

Thanks for the info guys.

Ever since I took delivery I have been slightly disappointed with the sound from my exhaust and it never sounded quite like some other 7's I've heard. I even had passengers comment on how civilized they found my car! I solved this by removing the cat and fitting the R500 box which made a huge difference. I'm hoping the RBTB will add even more character to the exhaust note. I don't want to blast everyone away, I just want the car to sound how it looks, if you know what I mean.

Out of interest the CC upgrade is from 175 to 220 but my car as standard is 180bhp. Will the upgrade make it up to 225??

My car is a 2012 Roadsport 175 ? , remove the cat = 180. There has been talk that the Duratec as standard is 180 bhp not 175 bhp ! Don't ask me why it wasn't called a Roadsport 180. Perhaps a new model would sell better with 180 bhp ?  thus the 360R . *soapbox*

I had my Roadsport 175 upgraded at the factory with the "220" mods about 2 years ago. I also replaced the standard exhaust with a cat-less titanium Raceco, and then took it to Steve at Track 'n Road for a tune-up.

Interestingly, Steve had to do quite a lot of work on the throttle body balancing before he even looked at the ECU mapping.

After the rolling road session I'm getting 210bhp at 7425rpm, red line at 7800. It is very smooth and easy to drive slowly or quickly. I've driven about 8000 miles since the upgrade, well worth it IMHO.

In Steve's opinion (and who am I to disagree), they were well out of balance. Now to be fair to CC, there was a period of 4 or 5 months between my getting the upgrade done and taking the car to T&R, so it could have just taken time to work loose, or something... But Steve did have to fiddle around with the adjustments a lot before being satisfied with the idle and throttle response. It took him best part of an hour, before even starting on the mapping.

In general I was happy with the work CC did: It was done on time and at a reasonable price. I did have a failed airflow sensor shortly after the work was done (I can't blame CC for this), but they collected the car, fixed it, and delivered it back to me free-of-charge within 3 days.

Exhaust noise isn't the big change apart from overrun farts pops and bangs - avoidable with an educated right foot(does it best if just covering the throttle )  but a head turning trick which works on teenagers between 12 and 85.  The noise change is induction - when roused you get an amazing feral scream which makes you think you are just about to win the 1973 F2 championship

Thx for all the comments and info guys.  In particular, thx for the various descriptions of the induction noise !!  I am sold and will get it organised in the New Year.  I have an F Type Jaguar S AWD which is biblical with the exhaust valves open in Sport and the supercharger screaming.  This should help its little red Seven brother match it.  The main benefit I think I will get it seems is in smooth increased power delivery.  At the moment I do the hard work on corners and breaking to catch most other cars at Knockhill but need that extra pull out of the hairpin and on the straight up the hill to just get the pass complete.

My self build 420R is currently sat at Crawley, post PBC, awaiting IVA ( and has been since early November!).  IVA still not scheduled until around Jan 18th, so this thread has inspired me -  Phoned Crawley yesterday and I'm going to kill 2 birds with 1 stone and get them to do the 210 to 220bhp upgrade while it's there with them (though will have to be done post IVA).  Happy Xmas car, I miss you....*silly**party*

Not rude at all !  Supplied and fitted by CC complete with warranty £4095.00 as advertised on CC parts upgrade 175 to 220 bhp , this may sound expensive !! But when you start to add up the  individual price from separate suppliers it soon mounts up . The reason I went the CC route was they are approved parts for the car and warrantee if in the future I want to sell my car the new owner knows the upgrade was done by CC . There will always be people who say you could get it done cheaper and probably they are right it's up to you !.

Hi John

i bet your car is awesome now it has ITB's. I know how much everyone raves about the step change in throttle response, your Seven will fly *wobble* . On the K there is popularity for verniers to finetune timing. Is that part of your package, or indeed quite so necessary on a Duratec?

It's a different car now no flat spots it pulls at all speeds with a lower note from the exhaust,  throaty , I drove through the Hindhead tunnel today WOW I'm glad I had my earplugs in , But it can be driven without drawing attention of others. I took some time thinking of the pros and cons and I'm glad I did the up grade it's a far better car now.
