andy couchman
Need to change the oil on the crossflow this winter (1.7, 150bhp, mainly road with the odd track day and sprint). Opie's website suggests a 5W-40 synthetic oil - is that too thin though? ISTR that if you go too thin the engine burns more oil.In terms of brands, the range is from Gulf at £20 to Castrol at £60. Anyone any views - the Gulf looks to be very inexpensive while Fuchs and Shell are around £30 for 5 litres.Anyone any views/suggestions/recommendations?Thanks all.Andy
elie boone
It depends a bit on your rev limit but a 10/40 semi synt oil will do just fine up to 7000 rpm, do you have a oil temp gauge ?
andy couchman
Thanks Elie - yes, just installed! Also run an oil cooler with a stat and have a 7,000 rev limit so 10/40 sounds good. Presumably if the oil tem is too high then run a thicker oil? Thanks.Andy
Drumster
Hi Andy,I only ever used Mobil 1 15w/50 in my x/fow. Not cheap but when I broke the engine for parts everything inside was as clean and shiny as the day it went in...... as you know the car was used for everything form blatting, trackdays, sprinting and touring. OliverSedlacek
I've used Mobil One 0W/40 for the last 90,000 miles. Oil consumption fine, negligible bore and bearing wear.
