rj
Would it be possible - without serious modification - to fit a live axle in a DeDion chassis?
simon_h
Not without major work I would say.The tunnel is too narrow with all the metal work in there now and the prop will hit the handbrake mounts on full bump amongst other things.
simon_h
Although my comments relate to the current chassis with tunnel handbrake. The older De-dion with under dash handbrake and curved metal tunnel may be ok but I havent seen what one of those is like underneath. elie boone
No it won't fit, the DD has the diff central in the chassis , a live axle has the diff flange offset to the center of the chassis.
rj
It's a 198x car, so with the handbrake under the dash.Need to have a closer look at the car. It it said to have a live axle, but the chassis No starts with KLD ?!?

Terry Field
I think a 1980's car is likely to have a live axle, but a peep under the rear end will soon tell you. And why would you want a live axle if you have a de dion? Terry
rj
It's a 1989 car, and I agree. I have seen the opposite: Swapping live axle for DeDion - but it's not simple. The chassis No is KLD - Kit Long Dedion, but the axle is certainly live axle.Me am confused. Klunk
You'll be able to tell by the chassis bracing on the rear bulkhead and it's associated aluminium panel. My first Caterham was the same age and had had Dedion to English axle conversion done when the diff bracing broke, which was common on early cars due to the thinner gauge tubing. The rear bulkhead 'A' was replaced/modified but it was only just noticible. I found out when I was at Arch replacing the rear bulkhead panel.Regards,Giles
rj
Giles, wasn't that an Ital to English axle conversion rather than DeDion to live?
Klunk
Hi Rj,No, definitely DeDion to English Axle. The lower rear bulkhead chassis rail is different hence the different rear bulkhead panel.Probably got some pictures somewhere, but it might take me a while to find them!
