2015 Tech forum - Classes 5, 6 & 7

Please see below a link to the proposed 2015 regs as drafted at the end of last year.

http://www.lotus7.club/sites/default/files/images/Docs/SpeedChamp/2015%20Championship%20Regulations%20-%20Draft%202.pdf

The new regulations are very simple for all 3 classes with few (if any) fundamental changes from the 2014 season.  I have no proposals to amend the regs  further but please feel free to discuss any ideas that you have.

The general regs - it only really affects class 6 should be amended to follow the MSA regs when referring to reverse gears.

We say that all cars should have an operational reverse gear.

MSA say that any car fitted with a reverse gear should ensure it remains operational.

Its a small issue but I believe this year it would have allowed me to remain in class and have a good battle with the others who really didn't care I lost reverse. I would have removed the reverse box and therefore complied with the rules as I would not have had one in the car and therefore not had to maintain its function/operation.

Where its useful let's follow the MSA.

I'm pretty certain I know what the MSA meant. But what is meant and what is written are different things. I have a replacement box now so its not an issue.

Its more to allow someone in the future to continue in the same scenario. They are all known to have a weakness and all the manufacturers are known not to necessarily keep parts or replacements.

Simon has suggested on another thread that we might want to consider merging Classes 5 and 6 at some point in the future.  Why not consider it now?  What do people think?

No thanks *biggrin*

On the reverse gear issue, class 6 is still a roadgoing class and as such cars ought to be able to be driven on the road. I know it is not law to have to have a reverse box but a Caterham without one wouldn't be much of a road going car. I don't really mind and I get that it's added complexity but if you are building an all out competition car then class 7 is the right place for you *thumbup* Just my twopenneth!

The only problem I might have for next year is that there might not be many people in class 5 as most of the competition will have dropped down to class 4.

The two mentions to my knowledge of reverse gears in the blue book are :-

Blue Book, Page 147

5.11.2. Be equipped with a reverse gear in normal working order unless otherwise stated in Specific Technical Regulations. Racing Cars of Periods A to E are exempt from this requirement.

Blue Book, page 330

Transmission
10.8.1. For Road-Going Series Production, Road-Going Specialist Production Cars, the reverse gear must remain operable at all times.
10.8.2. For Modified Series Production, Modified Specialist Production Cars, Hill Climb Super Sports, Sports Libre and Racing Cars, reverse gear is not required.

So was the MSAs intention that if you had one (a reverse gear, reverse box, starter motor on half shaft etc) that it had to work, however if you had no means of reversing then the rule was not required...

a bit like the spare tyre MOT rule of if you have one it has to be road legal, but if you don't have one it doesn't matter...

With regard the amalgamation idea, and the change in class 4

How many class 5 competitors next year?  very few - from being in a class with limited numbers it is not always as much fun.

I would welcome any change that made a bigger class number of entrants over any personal chance I had of winning a tin cup.  This I would think would be a better thing for the championship.

As as been shown big powered duratecs can beat lesser powered busa's

Spoke with Steve Holland today - he's gone the big Hyabusa route, same as Simon Jenks.  Maybe relevant to the high power Duratec vs Busa conversation is that the big Duratecs are in the 31's at Gurston and the Busa's can't touch them.

Maybe we'll be having the conversation the other way around next year with the Busa boys complaining that they can't get near the Duratec's?

Anyway ....  *spin*
