strongy
Just had rebuilt dizzie back from Aldon today First attempt - fitted to fire on no1 cylinder at 14degrees btdc Wouldn't fire but made some lovely popping noises Double checked dizzie cap and I was 180 degrees out - how did that happen? Removed rocker cover crank is definately 14 degress btdc. Rotar arm is pointing to No1 cylinder spark plug. I have tried to get a basic timing by in serting an allen key in the coil ht and listening for the "crack" as I twist the dizzie. Engine cranks but feels compressed and sluggish, won't fire up at all. First time I've attempted timing and I have to admit I'm stumped and frustrated now. Just want to go for a blat in this sunshine.
elie boone
Not to upset you but did you had the firing order right , 1-2-4-3, anti clock wise is more advance, clockwise less advance. Also do you have the right coil ?
Stationary M25 Traveller
I thought the 1600 Crossflow was 1-3-4-2 (but then that is just my memory from owning a Mark 2 Cortina over 30 years ago ..... )

Neil66
Just did a google search & apparently most 4 cyl inlines are 1-3-4-2 except ford! here and here Edited by - Neil66 on 12 Apr 2012 18:06:
Stationary M25 Traveller
The on-line info can be confusing at best ...... example ... Right, so to sum it up so far: four cylinder inline engines are always 1342 or 1243. If it's Ford* then it's assumed to be 1243 and if not then 1342. Flat four engines are different. * Regarding the 1243 firing order on the Ford, a helpful contributor has commented: "Only the Kent family of engines had the firing order 1243 (and their later derivatives i.e fiesta/Ka pushrod engines). All the OHC engines, zetec etc use 1342, as do the diesels". 😬
strongy
Yes its 1243. Fixed now, with the help of Mrs S, while I checked with a timing lamp then twisted the dizzie to the correct timing. I had it set too far btdc about 40 degrees I reckon. Sounds sweet now. Just in time for it to start pissing down! Thanks all
