Heater Plumbing

Recommended Posts

My S3 has a Zetec 1.8l and the engine installation has the heater permanently plumbed in. It gets a tad hot in nice weather like this! I'd like to be able to switch it off. I think I need a bypass valve http://www.caterhamparts.co.uk/product.php?id_product=333

and a control cable http://www.caterhamparts.co.uk/product.php?id_product=332. The heater is the old fashioned type with the 3 bladed 2 speed fan, blowing downward across the heater element.

Have I got this about right? Any other bits needed? Can anyone advise any tips for installing / mounting the valve before I order the parts? Where does the valve usually go?

Cheers in anticipation

NRG,

I have the same type of heater in my Zetec powered car. The bypass style valve is the one I used, James Whiting recommendation. I didn't bother with a cable, I just have the valve open in cool weather and closed in hot. Its easy enough to get at just in front of the heater.

Another trick I played with was to cut a couple of alloy plates which I slide under the rectangular heater outlets and these blank off the airflow into the footwells. They are held in place with a strip of duck tape. This variation means you can keep the heater matrix flowing but you don't scorch you shins.
