MarkyMarc
I have just put a new Banner in my car; the old one had a (breather?) tube plugged in the the side behind the +ve terminal. The new one seems to have a similar hole in the side, albeit it looks like it is plugged. two questions; what was the tube for, and does the new battery require it? Thanks! Tony Whitley
My new Banner didn't have a tube - I found out what it was for when my passenger footwell ended up covered in aluminium hydroxide
Paul McKenzie
Aluminium sulphate actually....I didn't think Banners were alkaline
Tony Whitley
I was thinking chloride, under the impression that batteries used hydrochloric acid. So, I won't go to bed quite as stupid as when I woke up, thanks.

MarkyMarc
Chaps, thanks for the replies. So the consensus is that I should remove the plug and refit the tube - right? Marc

jimh
I have just fitted a new Banner battery to my car. Mine had a sticker on the top of the new battery saying to remove the plugs before use. Mine had a red plug on the +ve side and a black one on the -ve. I pulled out the red plug which had quite a bit of pressure behind it, I then refitted it. As my existing vent tube was on the negative side I pried out the black plug and pushed the tube into the hole. The hose it not a very tight fit in the hole so I will have to monitor it to ensure it stays put. I'm assuming that it is OK to have just one of the vent holes open and connected to the vent tube?
