800BHP Duratec

Oh dear, oh dear.

I can see another page; "Even longer term project" on K80Rum.co.uk now 😬

That is impressive, but I'd like to see a dyno-plot. I bet on the road you pull off the roundabout, nail it, bog down, creep up to 6000rpm then it spins round and lands you in a "Thank you for driving carefully through the village" sign.

Don't like turbos. Its like doing AutoCAD Drawings in MS Paint...its just not the way things are meant to be done.

I have visited MDS in Sweden. I spent a couple of days as a guest there last year. I have been helping them with engine building information and supplied them a few parts. We speak quite regularly.

Nice bunch of guys. Real petrolheads. They do insane stuff with Volvos! We're pretty much on the same wavelength as we agree on tuning methods and had long chats and compared notes about what works and what doesn't.

They have sent me a Duratec development head to test on the flowbench. It works well. Especially on the exhaust side where all the ports are equal and have a straight shot out of the combustion chamber, instead of the slightly tortuous route some of the ports have to take, especially cylinder number four.

I will be importing their Duratec heads. The heads will work fine on a normally aspirated engines and might even out-perform the best heads we have seen to date, but they will come into their own on a forced induction engines due to their strenghthened internal design and the cross cooling.

I have always thought that forced induction was cheating but if you did want to go that route this would be the head to use. No doubt about it.

Thanks for the information Ammo, it's good to hear (and no surprise of course!) to hear you've been collaborating.

The heads themselves do sound very tasty. I know of one sevener that has some very well spec'd head with which he intends to build a monster engine and I must say if the price is similar, which I imagine it might be it's well out of my reach (the head in question was 3-4 times the cost of an UltimateP one)

Price aside, I'd certainly consider one for the supercharged project when I eventually get around to it.

If it ever gets off the ground my intention was for a modest, low-boost setup to keep it as usable as possible, rather than something bonkers that makes some impressive figures but it certainly makes sense to have a decent head if you're forcing more air through it in any case, especially if it also suits a n/a motor too

I now have one of the cross-cooled heavy duty heads including loads of fitting ancillaries.

It arrived with two different types of inlet manifold. It can have three different cooling arrangements, stock Duratec with the cross-cooling ports blanked and two alternative set ups with coolant exits above the exhaust ports. It comes with 35mm inlets and 31mm exhaust with room to go bigger, 1 mm bigger cam followers. Billet cam caps, etc. No prices yet.

Feel free to come and have a look if you are ever in this neck of the woods. At some point I'll take some photos. Although, thinking about it, I have some taken in Sweden in March '08 I could stick somewhere for people to see.

How's the supercharged engine coming along?

Thanks for updating the thread Ammo. I didn't realise the head had been reworked so extensively, it sounds very tasty. I'd certainly be interested in taking a gander.

Time's the real enemy against the supercharged project. It saddens me to say I've got little enough these days to work on the car itself with work, so I've decided head should win over heart and sold it on to some mad chap in west yorks that supercharges VX red-tops. It's still a project I'd like to do but it out to be used, not gathering dust.

If the chats I've been having with others are anything to go by though, there should be a gaggle of forced-induction 7s appearing soon; 2 duratecs and RiF's monster. It'll be an interesting couple of years for developments!

Those Swedes are nutters. Must be the long winter nights where they scheme up strange stuff.

The head is a re-designed, completly new casting. It is internally braced and thicker at the gasket face to withstand higher pressures.

I'll try and get my act together and post a few pics later.

Shame about the supercharged project. I was looking forward to see that.

I'm starting to think turbos. A guy at work has done nutty things like 1000 bhp Nissan Skylines, a 700 bhp Pinto! Stuff like that. I also know a couple of guys who drag race turbo bikes who have a lot of knowledge.

I've done a couple of supercharged engines but turbos are something I have never played around with. Maybe I should start.

Which reminds me of when I met Dave Vizard around 1988. I had just bought my first Supeflow flowbench and went to visit a friend who had bought a Superflow 901 dyno. I walk into the dyno room and there was David Vizard and a young Dave Mountain of Mountune.

Dave Mountain was talking on a mobile that was the size of a brick. Dave Vizard was standing at a bench with a turbo in bits. He turns around and his first words to me were: "Do you ever get the feeling that you don't know what the f**k you are doing? 😬 I'd never met him before. Just thinking about it still makes me laugh. 😬

Anyway, back to what I was saying. I have a nice Mazda 2.3 block that seems to be re-inforced with extra ribbing. I have the head. I have an extra stiff 88mm crank. Why not build a 600bhp turbo engine? And stick it in an RWD Escort perhaps?

It would make nice a change.

Just been speaking with one of my Swedish friends about this, and he told me about some more nutters in his home town. here

I can't read swedish, but if you look at the "Factum" page they're getting 952kw (1,276hp) and 835nm out of the 2.2 litre, 4 pot Volvo engine. 😬

Let the page scroll on the home page, and you can see a picture of the engine on the dyno, and the Turbo is nearly a big as the block!

Like you say Ammo, must be the long nights, and Vodka.

As Tony the tiger used to say, they're greeeaaat! *cool*

Love the carbon fibre "Hunchback" Volvo Mick.

here are some photos showing the coolant outlets and exhaust ports of the new Duratec head.

I could post some stock head photos too, so people can see the differences if they want.

If there is any interest I will.
