6 Speed Gearbox in live axle car

Has anyone fitted one to a live axle car? Mine is a 1988 car, long cockpit, zetec engine, currently still using th 4 spd Escort Sport box (no problems). Caterham have apparently not tried this, so am interested to know if anyone has, and also general view of the 'box from a useability perspective as well as the practicalities of fitting it to my car.

Why bother? The 6 speed box, as I understand it, was designed specifically to utilise the K series power/torque band.

I'm in the same boat as you - a Zetec with a 4 speed box in a live axle car. Apart from the fact that I can't decide what diff to run - and I've run everything from a 4.1 to a 3.7 (current), I'm really happy with the transmission.

I'd be interested in knowing if you've any probs with the Ital diff, as mine, typically, only lasts for 12 months before crying enough! I've now got 2 diffs from SPC, both with LSD, one in the car, the other in the garage!

Well, I was offered a box, so thought I'd see what was involved! Certainly the torque of the 2l Zetec argues against the need though! No broken diffs (yet), but I am always conscious of the possibilty, so maybe that makes for a more cautious right foot!!

My car makes around 20mph/1000rpm, and the unmodded engine has plenty of oomph even at 1000rpm in 4th, so perhaps I'll stick and save a couple of change-ups!

Hi

Well, I fitted a 6-speed to my live axle (crossflow) originally - and it was great) tongue.gif

I have now fitted a 6-speed and K series into my 1984 live axle (mad I know, but it works)..see This months Low Flying!! wink.gif

Barry Hunt is a real crossflow enthusiast and he runs a 6 speed box in his live axle car... it can be done!

cheers

STEVE
