fuel pump identification

Hi, I am told that my standard k series fuel pump may not be man enough for a 2.0 R400 duratec (on standard plenum) conversion. I have a spare fuel pump that was very kindly given to me by someone who upgraded from a 2.0 to a 2.3 duratec a few years ago. The numbers on the pump are: 0642 on the plastic end section near the connectors, and 6443327 and C0514-1 on the metal body of the pump. I did ask Caterham if they recognized it, but they were unable to help. From memory it was described as an R400 pump (unsure if k or duratec). I can send pictures, and would be very grateful if anyone can identify it please? Thanks for any help. Cheers, Paul.

Thanks Pendennis, do you happen to know the CC part no of the upgraded one so that I can check it out on the Caterham web site please? I searched for the number you mentioned but nothing came up...

A dyno session revealed my fuel pump to be inadequate, and I ended up going with the upstart Deatsch Werks DW201 pump, to good effect. It has the same dimensions and performance figures as the Walbro GSS340, but was less expensive and had a 3-year warranty rather than the 1-year warranty offered by Walbro. No affiliation; just a satisfied customer. *thumbup* They have a U.K. distributor.

If you care to read about it, my fuel pump search is briefly chronicled here. *wavey*

If I was you I'd not believe the website, give Caterham a ring as they should be in stock. I waited three months for one and although I ended up getting mine from a very kind gentleman on here, Darren at CC parts stated they were due into them in a week, and that was over a month ago *wink*

Otherwise as Jason said, the Walbro from Merlin Motorsport is almost a straight swap *thumbup*

Thank you for all the info. The pump has now been positively identified as the original one supplied with a 2004 R400 K series. It was run for 3 years with a 226bhp 2.0 Duratec with no issues so it should hopefully have the capacity for my planned 210bhp. I am fitting a fuel regulator with gauge in line. I don't want to get to the rolling road to find that the pump is inadequate. We can either try the existing standard 1.4 k series pump, change it to the 2004 R400 one ( if any different) or fit a new uprated Caterham, DW or Walbro. As the car is a long-term project and most parts are new, would it be advisable to replace the pump with a new one anyway?

Obvioulsy there is always the 'wear and tear' issue of any component, if you can afford then replace. I believe the R400 fuel pump is the standard one (it was on my SLR).

You may get away with standard pump, but depends on injectors and fuelling required. My advice is get the right injectors for your application, certainly not too small but also no point too big so delivery of standard pump may suffice *thumbup*

I contacted Caterham, and they suggest that any car above R300 spec would be supplied with an uprated fuel pump. Sadly they are out of stock of them for at least another 2 weeks...and my car is ready for it now. There was a thread on pistonheads mentioning that Rimmer Bros do a pump for a Rover 200 turbo, and that it is the same pump. Would anyone happen to know please? I have nothing against other makes, but am trying to fit new parts of Caterham spec whenever possible.

I to am looking at a new pump. In a previous thread on here I mention a fuel pump fuse blowing yesterday which could mean my pump is on the way out. Caterham do not have any uprated ones for my Superlight R VHPD.

I may try and get the one you mention Pendennis.

Hi DJBS, I'm Paul but will happily answer to Mad....cos I'm barking!! Not sure of your name either?

There is a foam sleeve with the kit, and we weren't sure if it was just packaging, or if it was a fuel resistant sleeve to hold the pump. It turned out to be the latter, and made fitting easy. The car should be fired up for the first time next week - can't wait *smile* It has been a total nut and bolt rebuild and conversion over 13 months....

Good luck with the kit.

Paul,

Done the business and back on the road.

Always amazes me that you can put the car away and everything is working and then you come to take it out and it will not start becuase the fuel pump has decided to give up the ghost. Fortunately fairly easy to diagnose and all sorted now and fuel a plenty!

Hope you're still on course to fire your's up - keep us posted.

Regards,

David

Good news David, glad it worked ok. We are still having fun...The brand new starter motor doesn't work, so the plenum and fuel rail etc had to come off again. After a strip down, the starter now works, and all is being put back. We also have some issues with USB to RS232 leads and software...2 steps forward and 3 back!! Cheers, Paul.
