  3. Hi, what hoses are included in the kit? Click here to go to my web site!
  4. Definitely Rob if the weather is OK, I had a fantastic drive back last Tuesday as the England match was on and the roads were empty. 😬 😬 We will be off to France in the 6 weeks school holidays, plan to drive down to the south and stay back a little from the cost and do the Monte Carlo, Nice area. In the tin top I hasten to add… ☹️ Click here to go to my web site!
  5. Sorry Rob, it’s a bit to big… Looking for something 1.6 to 2 Litre, prefer Jap but consider anything. How did the France trip go? Click here to go to my web site!
  6. Wanted, family sized tin top around £2500, anyone wanting to sell at the moment? Click here to go to my web site!
  7. Nic Its not a difficult job to see if the springs are broken. Checking does not alter the settings on the carbs…. To check, remove the fuel line by undoing the 14mm Banjo bolt (while its out see if there is a filter inside the banjo and check its clean) Then take off the central top cover held on with the wing nut, and remove the 5 screws that hold on the top cover of the carb Lift the cover gently so as not to damage the joint/gasket. When its off you will see a single 10mm brass disc at the back of the carb with a couple of slots. This holds the spring in place. If you can lift it easily then the spring is broken as it’s the spring that holds it in place. If it comes out with the spring attached then the bottom eye is broken, if not then you have to try and fish the broken spring out with a bit of bent wire, its not too difficult. If the disk is held firmly in place, the spring is OK. I would however always advise that the internal Weber springs are replaced by external ones. I have seen quite a few cars damaged over the years when the throttle sticks open at the wrong time! Mainly on rally escorts, but also a couple of sevens… Click here to go to my web site!
  8. Nic Are they Weber or Delortto carbs? The reason I ask is that Delortto have external springs and Weber have internal ones, sometimes supplemented with external one as well. If they are Webers be very carefull as the internal springs are prone to breaking. If you are lucky it’s the bottom eye of the spring that breaks in which case it just hangs there,,,, If you are unlucky it’s the top eye that breaks and the spring jambs up the throttle… Click here to go to my web site!

  10. Rob, Was that real miles or what the odometer said? I recon that the odometer is 20% out!! I did my daily trio to work in it last week, both my other cars say the round trip is 40 mile but in the Caterham it said it was 48 If the weather is OK this weekend I will let you know when I check it on my new SAT NAV 😬 If that is the case the car has also done 20% less miles than is on the clock! I will have to check when you changed from 15” to 13” wheels… as that may make a difference Click here to go to my web site!
  11. Sandy I did the same a while ago, replaced the standard tacho with a Stack and then added blue LED bulbs the rest of the instruments. We went out in the dark on Friday night and my wife commented how nice the dash looked with all the blue dials! Some may think it’s a bit max power though Click here to go to my web site!
  12. Thanks again RJ. I have removed and inspected everything now. The tensioner bearing feels OK but there is quite a lot of play in it side to side… I will replace it anyway as you say these are prone to failure (Local motor factor sells them in a kit with the cam belt) Interestingly the water pump impellor is plastic and is cracked quite badly, looks to have been breaking up… good job I decided to look at it!! Off to the dealers tomorrow to buy the parts, will report on any further progress as it goes back together! Thanks again for all the advice, this really is a great club! 13. Thanks guys (back under my old user name by the way!) I have just removed the head to find that the gasket has indeed gone. You can see that the fire rings on three of the four cylinders are nice and clean but on cylinder number 4 there is evidence of combustion leakage across the fire ring into the water way. Good news is it has not tracked the head or block. Have to say that although its done 90K there is no wear on the bores at all, in fact you can still see the hone marks!! It has a full service history though before we bought it and I have always done an oil change at 4000 mile intervals… While I am this far in I am going to replace the cam belt, tensioner and the water pump even though the belt was replaced at 75K What’s the consensus on replacing the head bolts? They are almost £50 from the dealer who says they must be replaced as they are stretch bolts? back to work - no time to update the web site!!
  14. Hi Tim Removing the vecta stopped the cutting out and the misfire…. I read on here that they give problems so I took the decision to take it off. It only took 30 mins, I just traced the wires back into the loom and reconnected the original wires together. Hope it cures your fault , with the suspect reliability of the units it would be my first place to look. back to work - no time to update the web site!!
  15. 😬 😬 😬 😬 😬 It is indeed Robs old car….. And it still hasn’t seen much rain *tongue* Back under my old user name…. Thanks Barry! back to work - no time to update the web site!!

  17. Ahhhhhhhhhh still is a HPC with a VX! Its going great since I got rid if the Vecta… Hope its your problem too… As I let my subscription lapse I have a new user name…. Beginning to regret my choice now though www.jtccc.co.uk
  18. My son has a 1998 Audi A3 with the 1.6 petrol engine, i think its the same as the golf 1.6? The coolant light came on yesterday and it appears to have lost a pint of water… There are no visable leaks so on the assumption its gone somewhere I suspect the head gasket… there are quite a few bubbles appearing in the header tank when its hot which is another clue. Anyone know if they are prone to head gasket or other problems that could be causing this problem? Its done 90K miles www.jtccc.co.uk
  19. Maplins sell a set of very small metric drills which can be used to drill jets out. A 145 main jet has a 1.45mm hole, a 180 air corrector has a 1.8 mm hole… A set of drills is a lot cheaper than a set of jets, especially if you only want to get it close to get it to the rolling road session. If you use a pin vice (maplins sell these as well) you can twist the drill through the jet by hand, The drills are also useful to size the holes… The Rolling road operator at Aldon once told me that many jets he sees have been modified in this way and people assume they have 145 mains when in fact they have 180!! The chokes are also easy to modify in the lathe but you have to remember that the inside bore is not parallel so you need to set the top slide to the appropriate angle. A set of chokes is now around £50 I belive 😳 www.jtccc.co.uk

  23. 1950 was a particularly good model year Phil. I would consider keeping her… Problem is if you sell you will be tempted to upgrade to a younger model and may have problems keeping up with the more lively performance… 😳 😳 back to work - no time to update the web site!!
