    brake lights

My brake lights work, but only when you push the pedal quite hard. The problem I have is that by the time cars behind me realise that I am braking I have almost stopped and they are almost on top of me! Is there any way of making the lights come on sooner, some sort of swith adjustment? and if so where would I fint it? Cheers Strongy

    worn rubber!

Just cleaning my car up today and I have noticed that one of the steering rack rubber gaiter-thingies has a small tear in it. Are these difficult to replace and can anyone advise me on the best procedure and also what lubricant to put in? Also what is the best polish to use on the exhaust and the rear sill protectors? Cheers Strongy

    high idle speed

I hate it when that happeSorry.

    high idle speed

I think that a crank sensor "talks" between a crank and the cams on an OHC engine to ensure that the timing is correct. Long live the x-flow! Strongy 😬

  6. What are the correct tyre pressures for road use on a 1700ss.? I am running on 185/60 R14's. Cheers Strongy
  7. I recently read in some previous posts that the pistons on a 1700 SS Caterham-supplied engine are none too good and would benefit from being replaced. The car that I have bought has covered 34k miles and has not had new pistons (or any other major engine work). Should I be concerned or are there plenty of other owners out there with good things to say about this type of engine. I would appreciate all feedback good and bad. Along with any other useful tips ie - cold starting etc. Also I rang Caterham today to get an owner manual for a 1989 1700 ss de dion (not supplied with my purchase), but they no longer have any. Does anybody have a spare or unwanted copy? I will willingly pay for it. Many thanks Strong Ps Thanks Mark

  9. Thanks Steve Alt fitted (only took 40 mins) all working fine and what a brilliant day for driving a seven in S.Wales today. *smile* *smile* *smile* *smile*
  10. I am a novice mechanic. I am about to replace the alternator on my 1700ss, the belt looks to me as if it only runs the water pump and the alternator - can anyone confirm this. How is the timing controlled on an x-flow engine?(I am only used to looking at OHC engines with external timing belts) Will I affect anything by replacing the alternator. Thanks to everyone for all of their previous advice - very helpful for a new (very happy) owner.
  11. Thank you all for your help and advice, I have never owned a car that was this much fun before!
  12. *eek*Anybody have any idea about legislation on exhaust noise. Mine has a side exit competition which is v.noisy and ocassionally pops flames . PS thanks everyone for replying to my previous questions, I now know how to check the oil in my dry sump, the switch does switch the guage between coolant and oil temp and it would appear that I need to change my alternator.

  14. 😬 I have just bought my first Caterham - a 1700 supersprint with a dry sump(G778 MGF). I have one or two niggles can anyone assist me please? 1. The red ignition light is constantly on even though the alternator is charging the battery correctly, is it possible that this warning lamp is wired incorrectly? The light does fade to nearly nothing when the engine is idling. 2. There is a switch next to the coolant temp guage, which when turned on makes the reading on the temp guage go right down. I don't know what this switch is for. 3. As there is no dipstick with the dry sump, how do I monitor the oil level? Any help or advice will be much appreciated and does anybody know when the next sunny day is forecast? ☹️
