  1. Thanks Greg and Roger, I've been out to the garage with a torch and yes it is a 831C block. It was supplied by Caterham as a factory built car. Cheers Strongy - go on, wake the neighbours. 😬
  2. Am I correct in saying that there are two types of block - an AX? and 711 How do I identify which mine is and where is the mark located? Mine is a 1989 1700 xflow dedion. As I look at the block from the exhaust side there is no writing to the right, as shown in the Tony Weale book. Finally is one type better than the other? Cheers Strongy - go on, wake the neighbours. 😬
  3. Fairly new to this so would appreciate an experienced view(s). In all of your respected opions what will be the best tyres to put on my 1700 xflow. It will only be used for road use, and not driven in the wet. It currently has A021 on the front and Avons at the rear, on 185 60 R14 size. Cheers Strongy - go on, wake the neighbours. 😬
  4. Not yet I haven't cheers Strongy - go on, wake the neighbours. 😬
  5. Thanks for the advice. Sadly the leak seems to be coming from the radiator core itself, not too bad at the moment but it must have been leaking for some time because it took two pints of fluid today. Time for a new rad I think. ☹️ Cheers Strongy - go on, wake the neighbours. 😬
  6. Hi Jon Yes please that sounds as though it will fit, I have fan and temp sender. If you let me know your address with an idea of postage I'll send you a cheque by return. Cheers Strongy - go on, wake the neighbours. 😬
  7. wanted, radiator to fit 1989 1700 ss xflow, pref increased capacity. Cheers Strongy - go on, wake the neighbours. 😬
  8. This has happened twice to me very recently. Same model as yours. First was an alternator with worn out diodes, but I had a spare so I fitted it, but after 300 miles same thing started to happen albeit at higher revs (6000). This was down to a burnt connector (top one nearest the manifold) which I replaced and is now fine. I am considering a heat shield between the alternator and the manifold along with a reduced sized pulley to try and "slow down" the alternator. Happy hunting, cheers Strongy - go on, wake the neighbours. 😬
  9. Gave it a quarter turn today (must have worked loose from the tension bar work on the alternator) and has stopped leaking. Have now found a slight water leak from the bl**dy radiator . Strongy Strongy - go on, wake the neighbours. 😬
  10. Just been running a test on my alternator and ran the engine (1700 xflow) at idle until it was warm I noticed a slight leak on the floor of the garage. It seems to be coming from the water pump it particular from the bolt that also attaches the alternator tension bar. Does anyone know the correct torque to tighten this bolt to and is this common? Cheers strongy Strongy - go on, wake the neighbours. 😬
  11. Looking for 2 chrome headlamp casing units with or without headlamp unit Cheers strongy Strongy - go on, wake the neighbours. 😬
  12. Having tinkered a bit more traced fault down to a loose connector on the alternator, off to buy some new spade connectors now. Strongy Strongy - go on, wake the neighbours. 😬
  13. Thanks everyone I'll check it on Friday Strongy - go on, wake the neighbours. 😬
  14. Phew, who would have thought an alternator would be so complicated. I think that it is overcharging, because ign lamp comes on at high revs (5000) {it used to be 6500 rpm and was almost a makeshift change up light, but as you can see light is now on at lower rpm and I suspect it will just get lower} I must confess I havn't measured output at battery terminals, I just assumed that diodes were overheated and knackered. On the topic of the pulley - outer diameter is 60mm and was from the valeo unit, I will swap this onto the recon unit. Any more input would be much appreciated before I put an order in with the folk at Caterham. Thanks for your help. Strongy Strongy - go on, wake the neighbours. 😬
  15. I recently read about the rear anti roll bar on the de-dion chassis having 4 settings to play about with to adjust the cars handling. Is this typical of all de-dions or did it appear in a later model year? Mine is a 1989 1700 xflow, and if so where are the adjustments to be found and which setting equals what? Cheers Strongy
  16. Gary I would be interested in the- alternator (what type/rating/age) alternator connectors K & N air filters are they still available and how much? Cheers Strongy
  17. I am just about to replace my alternator for the third time in as many months ☹️ (overcharging at high revs). Are these re-con units any good (have I just had a few lemons?)or is it just false economy, what are the Caterham supplied units like and does anyone know what price? All experiences greatly received. Cheers Strongy
  18. Just sending this to the top, Cheers, Strongy.
  19. Hi Graham I got the gaiters from Caterham - about six quid a pair and I removed the track rod end without splitting the ball joint. Seemed sensible as I didn't have a ball joint splitter. Cheers Strongy
  20. Have just finisted renewing a frame bushes, steering rack gaiters and hydraulic brake switch. All three jobs took only 1 hour so I am feeling very pleased with myself. Thanks to everybody for all of their help/suggestions to my previous postings. Bushes only took me 15 minutes and apart from working in freezing conditions I found that the hardest task was lining the holes back up to receive the bolt. Just need a nicer day to go and have road test now! 😬 😬 😬 Thanks again, Strongy
  21. I would like to get my hands on - Any Chris Rees Books A construction manual for 1989 xflow Lotus seven restoration/preparation/maintenance - tony wealey isbn 185532153x Any thing else that might be relevant? Cheers Strongy

Thanks I've already ordered a new hydraulic switch from Caterham for about £7.00. I'll let you know how i get on, Cheers Strongy

    brake lights

Mines is a 1989 x flow, so no switch in pedal box. It looks like there is a pressure switch? on the brake line. Is this easy to replace and does it leak brake fluid when undone? Cheers Strongy

    worn rubber!

Thanks for the advice, it sounds quite complicated for a novice, but i'm a fast learner. Is there a decent manual or book that would cover stuff like this? Cheers strongy

Thanks Fred much appreciated, should be safer now through town, on open roads I don't seem to get many cars behind me 😬
