    HPC sump removal

i had it the other way round. Sump came off and the gasket and plate were left firmly attached to the block. I ended up with the gasket surface of the plate slightly twisted and decided to fit a new plate. The local VX dealer had it in stock. I hope you've got the baffle - had to wait 5 wks for delivery from CC...
  2. Thanks for the advice - may do that! Might have been able to get tomorrow locally - & not a bad idea to put it into context with a comparison first!
  3. I need to replace the top ball joint in my 1997 De Dion - can anyone tell me what this part is originally from? Or do I have to get from CC? surprised I couldn't find already on here - may have missed it..

    Wheel dollies

Anyone got any advice on these? I want a set of 4 so I can easily move the car around the garage. Screwfix, MachineMart & others sell the type that go under each wheel. Just wondering if any are better than others. Is there an alternative to this type? Any that sit under the chassis rather than the tyre?
  5. Checkout the current thread "Driveshaft CV Boot" - if you can give it a go yourself you could get it down to a tenner
  6. I ashamedly did similiar a while back. Can't believe it myself - but guess there is no other explanation for the reversal.. I did manage to get it back and the battery performed ok. I drained it completely as far as I was concerned by connecting a 12v light and leaving connected to battery for a few days. Then connected charger the right way round - and aok. Looking at this thread maybe I was lucky?!
  7. Just noticed this thread. How did you get on with the 'split' boot? I did this job earlier in the year - I opted for a boot kit supplied from Caterham although I now have th Ford part. Took a while to get the joint apart - but I'll manage it a lot quicker next time now I know I need to hit it that hard... No spring clips on mine - just an interference fit on the splines
  8. Yep – scaffold planks and a Halfords budget trolley jack have served me proud for a long time. BUT – have just treated myself to a really nice low profile (saddle height less than 90mm) aluminium model from my local Costco. Not sure if they still have but can’t recommend it enough. Manufacturer “Arccan” I believe – and the cost was approx £75 I think.

    Ullapool - Sat 30th

Hey Clive - just saw your post. That was (most likely) myself & HWMBO. And it has to rate as probably the best ever trip we've ever done. Unbelievable weather, great scenery, fantastic roads - and hardly anyone else on them. We took a trip from Aberdeen on the Sat morning, overnight in Gairloch and then a blast back on Sunday. We have to find time (and the weather!) to do more of those...

    Dive shaft joints

Thanks Ian. Finally got it off last night utilising a large vice at my work, a blind chisel with bigger hammer and then a puller to finish... I did get what appears to be slivers of metal come from betwen the spider and the shaft - did you get same? I'm a little concerned! There is a radial groove on the shaft splines but nothing internally on the spider. So am I ok to just knock the spider back on with locktite do you think? I have a feeling it's going to be tight going back on!

    Dive shaft joints

Thanks guys. There's no circlip - so either internal spring clip or most likely just an interference fit I imagine. But - there must be some interference! I started with light blows, moved onto heavy - and have tried a 3-leg puller. And yet it still doesn't budge... Will visit my local garage tomorrow - maybe they have a more substantial puller & will call caterham to see if they can shed any light... Other than getting this off - the job hasn't been too bad...!

    Dive shaft joints

Help! No replies! Hopefully nobody fooled by the typo in topic..! I can't be only one with a perished drive shaft gaiter - starting to think I'm only 1 foolish enough to think I can replace it. Caterham told me they replace the whole shaft due to the labour hourly rate they charge not making anything else worthwhile. But they said it was straightforward enough to do as a homer... I have the drive shaft out and the joint apart but still have the joint 'spider' on the end of the shaft - and it won't budge! Should it not just pull off the splines...? Need to get it off to put new gaiter & can on shaft.
  13. Well - having not fitted it myself I can't verify the weight of individual pieces. But certainly my girlfriend couldn't assist with the total box weight. Probably about 50-60 kg I'd imagine. Two guys can move it around ok. But the assembly would not require lifting that amount as it's in component form and gets assembled as it goes up. The guy who fitted it did say the instructions weren't the best, but to be honest they looked pretty comprehensive to me. Lot of pictures rather than words. I complicated it a bit as needed an extra 'fitting kit' cos wanted it to fit between block work rather than on back of blockwork which sems to be the norm. If you went through it on paper first then it's not going to be a problem - much more straightforward than a 7!
  14. Ok - so I didn't fit it - but I can recommend a Hormann sectional door. Never had a sectional before but just had one fitted to my new garage by the joiner who put the roof on. He'd never done one before but he said it was straightforward enough - def want a helper though! he did it in less than a day. Seems like a quality product. Got it through online www.garagedoorco.co.uk - good service, price & quick delivery. And I am not affiliated!

    Dive shaft joints

I need to replace the outer nearside driveshaft gaiter on my de-dion 7. I have the boot kit - how do I get the joint apart?! I don't really want to use the cone-fit slip-over gaiter type... Any advice gratefully received!

    Tyres 205/45 R16

I have a 2.0 VX on the original wheels & tyres. I need new tyres - but don't intend changing the wheels. Car is only used on public roads - although being north of scotland they are nice deserted roads.. :-) Can anyone suggest a decent tyre available in this size - 205/45 R16? Looking for something with lots of dry grip - not bothered how long they last (or don't last!)
