  1. Quoting Wrightpayne: Mine is tywrapped to the rear bulkhead. Did have it going over the driveshaft at first but it didn't seem right the driveshaft spinning with a cable looped around it. Let me know if you need a picture. Owners club next week - you going? Ian Should be OK, thanks Ian, I'll just make sure it's not going to touch / rub anywhere it shouldn't. (ooo-eeer) On nights next week (starting at 11pm) so may pop in on the way to work depending what time I've got to bed on Wednesday morning / afternoon. Is the King's Arms open again now?
  2. Yay - got the spring back in 😬 Cleaned & degreased the sliders and think they may well be OK now. Will get some of the correct red(?) grease and have a further play. HOWEVER, I'm bloody glad I started looking at the handbrake cable - a previous owner / builder had tie-wrapped it to the T-piece on the dedion tube and it was wearing through 😳 See new thread Ben
  3. If you didn't build your car / fit your own handbrake cable, I'd check that someone hasn't tie-wrapped it to the T-piece on the de-dion tube. One of the previous owners / builder had on mine, and the results are rather worrying f-ing scary It was merrily wearing its way through the brass , towards the fluid. Rather pleased I found it when I did. Ben. Edited by - _Benedict_ on 6 Mar 2013 12:53:59
  4. Thanks for replies, guys. Workshop manual looks v.useful, thanks Mav - another bookmark Sandboy - will try clean and re-grease then, ta. I was worried, as after removing caliper from carrier, one slider moved in and out only (in the direction it's designed), while the other had play side to side. My concern is that the force on these when braking is predominantly to the side and so if one is a close fit and one isn't, then all the load may be on the the one with the close fit, IYSWIM. Oh well - back to trying to persuade the spring back into place! Ben (edit to correct apparent olde englishe spellinge!) Edited by - _Benedict_ on 6 Mar 2013 10:09:20
  5. Funnily enough I've had something that sounds identical - but it's only very intermittent (and only when warm too) at the mo. Definitely sounds like a dry bearing to me too (we have to replace enough of them at work!). I too have eliminated the alternator, but as it's intermittent - as soon as I want to listen to track it down, it disappears completely. I shall be very interested to hear your findings therefore, and will post mine if I find anything first. Ben
  6. Does anybody know where I can get a caliper carrier/bracket for the standard sierra rear caliper? I'm assuming that any lateral play in the slider mechanism is not permissible - actually, even if it's technically OK, I don't think I'd be happy with it. Caterham list them (here) but are showing as out of stock. Also - does anybody have any tips for getting the handbrake return spring re-located on the top of the caliper. Some idiot seems to have removed it 🙆🏻 Cheers, Ben Edited by - _Benedict_ on 5 Mar 2013 21:34:27
  7. Quoting jackb_ms: What about adding a MAP and a wide band lambda and enabling self mapping. Would that help the engine running smoother? Jack Not sure if the DTA ECU supports self mapping; in fact thinking about it, I'm not sure how the correction works. Do ECUs simply measure the (manifold?) air pressure and apply a figure to lean off the mixture by - like the starting/cold enrichment table but in reverse, or does it generally require more of a 3D mapping experience on the rollers? Thinking about it though I'm not sure how you'd manage the latter without a sealed room and a vacuum pump Will have to dig out the DTA software and have a look - oh and FWIW the DTA was on the car when I bought it so I don't know why it was chosen over an emerald when the engine work was done. Ben
  8. We're currently starting to plan a trip/tour to France next year in the seven. I'm vaguely aware that people in the past have had problems with thinner air at higher altitude (ie going up into the Pyrenees/Alps) in mapped ECUs that don't have an external and/or(?) manifold pressure sensor & compensation. How high can one realistically go before it becomes either unpleasant to drive, or detrimental to the engine? Depending on the general consensus I may either avoid the highest ground, or look to add a pressure sensor and some compensation in the map, I'd just be really interested to know peoples experiences / opinions. EDIT: should probably add that it's a DVA built engine with DTH Jenveys mapped on a DTA ECU with ~215bhb Cheery, Ben Edited by - _Benedict_ on 3 Mar 2013 20:21:47
  9. Quoting Sandboy: having seen how much cc want for one thought might be worth a try on here, anoyone got a spare one gathering dust? Just spotted this thread - I've got a right-angle gearbox-speedo drive thing from when I went to an electronic speedo. If you blatmail me your address then it's yours for whatever you think is an appropriate donation to NtL. Cheers, Ben
  10. Something else to bear in mind is that manufacturers seem to measure the tyres from different points ( ) or use different length millimetres ❗ Here's a photo I took of a 175 width CR500 next to a 185 width Yoko A021R. It was even more noticeable in the flesh rubber that the CR500 was wider than the Yoko. Unless I'm missing something
  11. Last summer I ordered an alloy handbrake sleeve from Caterham. The (presumably) new style one arrived, with "Caterham" down the side: I'd rather have the old stlye: I think the new style will go well with the Caterham 6-speed gearknob - it has a similar shine as well as the logo. My knob ( 😳) is more matt and so will go better with the old one. ...So does anybody want to swap? Not sure whether this is a "Wanted" or "For-Sale". As it's technically both, I've posted to both forums; hope this is OK. Cheers, Ben Edited by - _Benedict_ on 25 Feb 2013 17:33:33

  13. OK, so next question (unless I've missed something obvious again!): Why is the SV one significantly cheaper - you'd think ther was more material in that, as well as the economies of scale working the other way 🤔
  14. Quoting Paul Richards: Doh!! Didn't spot one was for an SV and one for a S3. Still strange that it appears SV mounts were shortened. Perhaps originals were a poor fit. Doh! indeed, neither did I - that's what comes of going straight to the parts from the (very good, it has to be said) search facility. It may well remain a mystery why the SV's mount was shortened, but at least I now know which one (NOT) to get Cheers, Ben
  15. Does anyone know why the LH K-series engine mount for 2004 onwards is 4mm shorter than previous / non-dateed version 🤔 I can't see a corresponding RH mount that's 4mm longer, so wondering what changed. My car is pre 2004 but my engine was fitted post 2004, so wondering if the blocks may be slightly different 🤔 Cheers, Ben Edited by - _Benedict_ on 20 Feb 2013 16:40:51
  16. Mail order from here - they sell them in 10 pairs ETA: the website's just started being ponderously slow - it gets there eventually though 😬 Ben Edited by - _Benedict_ on 20 Feb 2013 10:15:45
  17. I'm about to put the rear hub/driveshaft/ear assemblies back on after having the diff out and have been peering at the dedion ears. As you do. Firstly, there are ally shims either side between the ear and the dd-tube. They look possibly a bit home made, though I'm not sure. They are not tapered as far as I can tell (~0.9mm all over - so not to adjust camber). Are these normal 🤔 Secondstly, the ears have 1.5 stamped on them. I assume that this is the camber in degrees they impart to the rear wheels - is that (generally considered) correct for 8" CR500s 🤔 I'm also working on the assumption that they are not left/right handed; they're just thicker at the bottom? Cheers, Ben 😬
  18. Found on eBay I think I'm going to wait till they release the underpants 🙆🏻 😳 Ben 😬
  19. I have a wheel / tyre cluttering up the garage that I need to get rid of. It was in the boot of the 58 reg Fiesta that SWMBO recently bought and is stickered with an "80kph" sticker, presumably as a space saver, though it's hardly any thinner than the tyres on the car. I've replaced this spare, as the tyre's OD was hugely different to the main 4 tyres (possibly OK at up to 80kph ) so I was happier with a "proper" spare, especially as it still fits in the wheel-well! As a consequence this one is taking up space we haven't got, so if anybody can collect (or GONADS) it from Leicester you're welcome to it - ideally with an NtL contribution - which I'll match. Ben. 20. Benedict.

    Rivnuts

How about a rubber captive nut? As per the dwgs on the page, they "clinch" themselves when tightened, but release when undone. You could then pop them out and fit some (coloured?) blanking grommets, or even keep then fitted, and screw in some coloured dome-head aluminium screws, when running from the law not wanting a reg-plate on 😬 Ben Edited by - _Benedict_ on 4 Dec 2012 05:33:43
  21. Another from me for the ST500/700 You can only get them in "700" guise now, paying extra for the loom and sensors if you want the temperature / pressure readouts. I prefer to just have the roadspeed on the LCD display, and have used the "money I saved" over not getting the st8000 to get Stack's auxiliary 270deg steppermotor gauges. Apart from personally liking the aesthetics, it's really easy to check what direction they're all pointing in with a very quick sideways glance, rather than focussing on / scrolling through the LCD display. My dash now looks like this (these are the best pics I've got at the mo, sorry!): Ben 😬 Edited to make pics sensible dimensions Edited by - _Benedict_ on 10 Oct 2012 17:30:45
  22. Thanks for that - not sure if I'll end up working an evening shift on one or all of weds/thurs/fri this week yet, but if I'm not, than I'll try and pop along... Ben 😬
  23. Right, may have to get polishing over the winter then 😬 Which is the Warwickshire meeting you go to? - I've had a look at the L7C site / calendar and it's rather confusing. Warks South and North are both down as being on Wednesdays, the meeting places are only about 6 miles apart and... (this made me smile) the North Warks meeting place is farther south than the South Warks one ❗ 😬 Cheers, Ben
