  1. Thought had crossed my mind... I will suggest we travel up the section of empty road away from the pub to do any test other than idle checks.... Phil Waters Q181 ABL - 1600 X/F smile.gif
  2. Hi Steve, I have just bought two screens from Kimble Engineering, they cost me £46+vat each and are the pukka Brooklands screens. John Kimble is really helpful and knows the 7. You can call him on 01803 835757. I called caterham and they want 58.64+vat so I was chuffed (Demon Thieves want around 65+vat !!) As for the stantion, I am waiting for Caterham to get the 'behind wiper' type in at the moment (should be this week - I am told). The over wiper motor version would require the motors to be removed - bit of a drag as I want to be able to swap. The cost of the stantion is 104+vat - If i remember right - But hands off the first one - its mine teeth.gif All up my screens, stantion and the VAT was less than DT's want for them before the VAT!!! The mirrors were 30 quid for two inc postage and VAT, then just a few M4x15mm screws and nuts and some 35mm ones for the mirrors..bingo - can catch flys all I want now smile.gif Hope thats helps. Can also try CobraSpares for lots of nice mirrors and they also do the screen (I order two mirrors yesterday and they were very helpful - supplied a dimension for me to check etc) Phil Waters Q181 ABL - 1600 X/F smile.gif Edited by - philwaters on 25 Jul 2001 13:37:45 Edited by - philwaters on 26 Jul 2001 13:38:55
  3. Hey guys.. the one i'm looking at buying only goes up to 130db(a) !!! teeth.gif Might have to measure it from Camberly to keep it on the scale. Am planning on getting it tomorrow - depending on stock - so will bring it along. Phil Waters Q181 ABL - 1600 X/F smile.gif Edited by - philwaters on 6 Jul 2001 13:56:58
  4. Hi Steve, I'm a regular at the Phoenix and am thinking of getting a cheep sound meter from Maplin (50 quid I think) in order to fine tune my home cinema/Hi-fi and of course check out how loud my car is. I just need the time to get to the shops... maybe this Saturday. If I do manage to get it I will bring it along to the Wednesday meet next week (11th) and you would be welcome to test your car - same goes to all who turn up...Haven't got it yet though!! 5. I am always looking for ways to spend money on my car so I don't suppose anyone has any pictures of how the spherical bearing looks.. I seem to remember you having to replace the whole A frome with the Caterham kit... is this no longer true? Phil Waters Q181 ABL - 1600 X/F smile.gif
  6. I have already mailed Caterham but heard nothing from them... and I would have thought that having a proper logo on the back of a car is better than some badly cut out jobgy... Its not as if I am going to put it anywhere other than my car or claim anything to have been made by them, and at the end of the day any one could scan something it and use it.. the reason I can't is that I want itt BIG smile.gif Oh and I have mailed about the club sticker - but heard nothing so far teeth.gif I will have both if possible. Phil Waters Q181 ABL - 1600 X/F smile.gif
  7. Hi, This is a bit of a long shot, but does anyone have the Caterham Logo in a drawing format (i.e. dxf/dwg or igs - typical Autocad outputs) I work on 3D modeling so can import any drawing standards and want to get some prices on a large sticker for the rear of my car when i dump the spare but Caterham have stopped doing these due to cost. Phil Waters Q181 ABL - 1600 X/F smile.gif
  8. Well I've done it again. Went along t a club meet last night and came away with too many things to think about buying. You'd thind I'd get past this stage after 5yrs of having the car- but nope. I have borrowed Steve Fosters Aero screens to try out and am a convert (I think he just wanted an easy drive home with my screen smile.gif. I mailed Caterham today and they currently have the 'over wiper' stantions but not the behind type... I didn't know there were different type. Can anyone tell what these are like - or point me towards some pictures on the web? Also, appoligies to Brent for not having long enough/chance to chat last night, but I am interested in the progressive rate springs for the rear. Caterham recommend fitting Bilstiens all round and my Spax are only 1yr old now so before I waste yet more money (sad.gif)I was after other peoples experiances. Are these now standard fit on Live Axles? In what way is the ride improved and the handling for that matter? etc.. Phil Waters Q181 ABL - 1600 X/F smile.gif

    Wheels

I have had 13" since the car was new and never had too many problems with ground clearance. That was until I changed to 60 (from 70) profile tires and hit everything raised on the road that wasn't a bit of sand or so it seemed. Adjustable platforms sorted that out when funds allowed, but I would say to check your steering rack height afterwards as just my profile change gave me lots of bump steer and in order to keep the ground clearance I had to take some spacers out from under the rack. Nothing that isn't fixable - but if you think it handles badly afterwards its worth checking. A very rough guide I have found is to try to aim for parallel steering arms or ones that are higher on the wheel end than the car. Mine ended up higher at the wheel end and this was horrible. oops - ranted a bit there sorry. Phil Waters Q181 ABL - 1600 X/F smile.gif
  10. Well having had a very quick drive last night and then another one into work this morning I can say that it must have been the plug as it was running fine again. 'Touch Wood'. I still can't believe that a plug would go after such a short time - still mustn't grumble as its cheap and easy to fix and I can relax again now. smile.gif Thanks for replying everyone and let me know if you've heard of similar plug stories, be interesting to know mine wasn't a one off. Phil Waters Q181 ABL - 1600 X/F smile.gif
  11. Phil himself is keeping quiet as he doesn't want to jinx it into something more expensive! will post tomorrow if this is the cure. unusual for just one plug to go, and if it is this it will only have done 2k miles, although they were quite hard miles on the Haggis Hunt. 12. Hi, Went to drive over to Steve Fosters yesterday to check out his aero-screens on my car and cough, splutter BANG - switch off and push the car back up the road (thanks to a neighbour) and into the garage. sad.gif Phoned Steve up who came over and we spent around 4hrs trying to find the problem - but haven't. Did all we could think off - new plug leads, compression test (fine), valve clearances (were off but didn't fix it), swapped coil with friends old one (who upgraded).... nothing. But... just as we were going to stop we put the timing strobe on and whilst it looked fine at tickover...when we revved it up just a bit , say 2-2500 you could watch as it missed sparks out... i.e. flash flash flash blank flash flash etc etc .... I am hoping this is the problem, certainly shouldn't be doing that anyway. Would it mean that you had a cylinder full of unburnt fuel which gets chucked out the exhaust and could ignite and misfire....? I can only think that it must be the distributor, but can't see how it would/could start missing sparks out...and not fail completely. I have the friends old one to use as a test, but the problem is that he also gave me a little ignition box (box shaped heatsinked thing) which I'm sure I don't have on my car (unless its under the dash and I've never seen it) so not sure it is the same as my one and can be substituted..His car is 94/95 1600 sprint and mine is a 96 Classic - was the spec changed? Does anyone have any good tips on how to swap dizzy's easily or any other possible causes. Help - please. Phil Waters Q181 ABL - 1600 X/F smile.gif
  13. Dust?! And there was me thinking I'd follow the lead of your engine and start chewing M6 nuts...! Lightly marinaded in SynerG - lovely wink.gif Phil Waters Q181 ABL - 1600 X/F smile.gif
  14. Hi, Tried the hairdryer, but just had a very hot room so tried the toaster last night and it was great... about 2 mins on there and it was very pliable, no cracks or burning and is now 1.5" further in.. have yet to try it on the car though.. I've now got the bug of Perspex and want to try to make a single Aeroscreen...anyone done this, found a good way of fixing etc? I don't want to make too many new holes... Phil Waters Q181 ABL - 1600 X/F smile.gif
  15. Hmmm a little far indeed. We shall reserve the long boring drive up for the important jobs like engine out.. with Steve's growing collection if gearbox's I think he feels he should swap them to suit each weeks driving conditions... still means we get good practice.. and I can laugh at the weight heheh (:p) Enjoy the weather when you can Phil Waters Q181 ABL - 1600 X/F smile.gif
  16. Great thanks. Will do.. I phoned Caterham and the guy I spoke to couldn't tell me. Car is not usable at the moment and its not raining! typical teeth.gif Phil Waters Q181 ABL - 1600X/F smile.gif
  17. Andrew, well if your in my area (Bracknell/Reading), I'll be happy to help out if you need it. Any excuse to mess about with cars. teeth.gif Phil Waters Q181 ABL - 1600X/F smile.gif
  18. Oh no, of course not. It is indeed Great and in the case of Steve's, I can confirm it is very mighty. I want one. Twas my arm under the car holding on the windage plate and generally got in the way whilst we did the job. It was only meant as a bit of friendly banter. wink.gif Phil Waters Q181 ABL - 1600X/F smile.gif
  19. Don't remind him!!! it was very chewed but then I guess those big engines need some roughage from time to time. Phil Waters Q181 ABL - 1600X/F smile.gif
  20. 4-2-1 rear exit exhaust sitting in garage loft. fit x/flow engined caterham. complete with shield. Might as well go to anyone who wants/needs it than collect dust. offers Phil Waters Q181 ABL - 1600X/F smile.gif
  21. Hi all, Managed to snap off my little plastic breather pipe on my axle last night - oh good i thought. I've ordered a new one from Caterham, but would prefer to rig up a catch tank for the oil that comes out. Does anybody out there know what the thread is. I've heard so far that it might be a 1/8" NPTF - is this right? Anyone done this mod and have suggestions? My axle has always leaked and I'm hoping this might fix it, if not then its an axle out job and pinion seal sad.gif Phil Waters Q181 ABL - 1600X/F smile.gif

  24. I agree with Keith jecks that the deflectors are a waste of time, I found they made no difference and still had to hold on to the old cap. But they did polish up nice - eh Steve. I am going o see if I can bend the perspex a little more over a toaster (although I doubt it will be enough as its quite thick). As you are driving, if yo hold them out further (about 2") you can notice the reduced baffling. When I brave wrecking Steves deflectors I'll post the results.. smile.gif Long term I think its got to be Aero's though and they look the puppy's privates Phil Waters Q181 ABL - 1600X/F smile.gif
  25. Thanks guys, all good things to check out, hopefully I'll get chance tonight. How do I tell if i've got worn float needles? is it obvious to the naked eye? and also are replacement easy to get hold of - do they come in a weber service kit thingy? Phil Waters Q181 ABL - 1600X/F
