richard - if it's in the racelinefilter housing just whip it out, tape up and put back in and you'll lose hardly any oil.

There's Duratecs and there's Duratecs! You want a 'Focus' engine which has the better head casting but a crap crank, so if you're going to reuse the crank you want a Ranger bottom end - that's what I have in my new 2.3l

Richard,
On my 2.0l I had the stack dash oil temp sender in the oil filter housing and when I filled up with oil it started to leak, I whipped it out and put a bit of PTFE tape around the thread and it was fine despite numerous trackdays and 4,500 miles over 2.5 years - so yes it'll be fine.
cheers

Sorry stuart, looked at the pics again and you're right - his header tank vent/overflow goes into the head though?

Hi Phil,
Sorry 2 reasons/excuses for the non-response:
1 - blatmail doesn't seem to have stopped working for me for some reason
2 -I picked the engine up saturday and have been busy trying to get it in the car - finally got it in tonight - still got the wiring and plumbing to do yet.
Can you send email to mikeedgeuk AT hotmail DOT com and we'll try and sort it out
cheers

Andy, Stuart, Simon,
thanks for the info but I'm finding it hard to visualise where you mean, any chance of sending me some pics to mikeedgeuk AT hotmail DOT com?
Danny sent me some pics today but both his ECU and stack sensor seem to be in the head next to the coolant outlet block - I don't have any outlets or holes there, don't know if Mick (who built the engine) drilled a tapped a couple of wholes there?
Guess I'm looking for a simple solution, don't want to drill and tap the head on an assembled engine otherwise I'll have swarf in the waterways - guess i can take the coolant outlet block off first though....

I need to find a place to put it in my new home made cooling pipework (a combination of rubber hoses and alloy tubing - similar to other Duratec configurations)What thread is is (tapered?) and how to I get a boss to add to my system to mount it (without going to the hassle of getting one welded into the alloy tubing?)

Thanks for the offer Adam - can't make tonight though as I need to butcher my new Quaife box to get it to fit the Raceline hydraulic clutch actuator - need to cut the input shaft sleeve of the gearbox with hacksaw apparently 😳

Adam, I'm interested in more front end grip AND the CSR wings - you're in Camberley right? If so maybe I could come over sometime and take a look?
cheers

Do you have these Adam? How do you go about making the wingstays?
I thought I'd heard somewhere that the CSR runs wider front tyre/wheels with different offsets? I like the idea of a bit more front end grip so would be interested in the wider wheels which I guess means making some new wingstays so I might as well have the CSR wings at the same time 😬
Any idea how easy it'd be to achieve all of the above?

I'm going to put the new 2.3l Duratec in tomorrow and have a few questions:
1 - I know the gearbox to bell housing bolts should be torqued to 40lb/ft but what about the bellhousing to engine block bolts?
2 - Do I need to grease the gearbox input shaft splines (where they go into the clutch) or do you leave it dry?
3 - The gearbox (Road and Race 5 speed prod box with quaife alloy casing) came without a reverse switch, Phils sending it in the post, but can I fit it after the gearbox is in the car, i.e. can I get to it via the rubber grommet in the side of the transmission tunnel?

as you say there ar 2 bolts which attach the rubber mount (plate) to the chassis - however you'll see in the middle of the mounting plate there's a circular hole and inside is a large bolt which secures the rubber mount to the gearbox.
So you can either remove the single rubber mount to gearbox bolt or the two rubber mount to chassis bolts (or both the above).
If the gearbox weren't fixed to the mount it'd only be held in place by the two engine mounts and would surely end up moving around!

A number of points:
1 - 108db?!?! My static is always around 94db on a home grown 2.0l Duratec but with slightly more aggressive cams than yours so you should be able to get down to this level without much problem - that 108bd sounds suspicious to me
2 - are you sure the rev limit is 7,800? I would have thought nearer 7,250rmp which mine is?
3 - the (road) R400 runs an alluminium plenum so no bonnet cutout and no open ended trumpets so it should be quiet on the induction side (I have throttle bodies and a bonnet cutout and this is a problem for me)
4 - your silencer maybe a CSR spec but your downpipes/headers will be different as you have the narrow bodied chassis - technically academic as it won't alter the noisebut just thought I'd be pedantic 😬 Caterham tend to run small silencers for the road so I'd suggest you get yourself a large Raceco silencer, sure Ammo could sort you out with something.

OK I think you've scared me off the idea 😳
Can't be arsed with the polish it yourself route (I'm a lazy sod 😬), having spent another £12K on an engine & gearbox upgrade I might as well spend another £100 on a professional polish, any idea where I can get it done in the Farnham, Surrey area?

Does anyone know where I can buy or borrow some in my area? I have the exhaust off awaiting the new engine so might as well give it a good clean up now

You could easily get 300bhp+ from a mildly ported and remapped 1.8 K-series (or so I'm told on blatchat )
Well done Ammo! keep up the good record please
Oh and well done Danny, don't know what for cos Ammo put all the work in, you cheque book mechanic 😳 😬
