X/flow breathing and oil loss[found hole in sump]

I have a 1700 X/flow and it is leaking oil, I believe it is leaking around the crankcase breather outlet. I have set up my breathing system according to the Burtons catalogue, I now have a catch tank at the back of the engine above the high of the filler cap on the rocker cover, this is connected to the crank case breather and secondly to the rocker cover at the back end.

At present the drain at the bottom is not connected to anything but I may take this down to the sump as I have all the bits.

I feel that the oil filer cap is breathing rather than sending the pressure back up and through the catch tank.

1. Anyone had trouble with leaks around the crank case breather?

2. Do you think this all sounds correctly laid out?

3. Is there an oil filler cap that does not breath like the standard Ford thing I have at present?

 

I have checked compressions and all are good.

Hi Phil

Suffered from this till i replaced the Mobile one with Valvoline racing 20/50 oil and did the cam cover adapt . Get hold of two Ford Transit threaded unions about £18, one is angled and tuther strait . Locate the one to recieve the oil up from the breather to the front of Alloy cam cover (front of engine). That is where the drain to the engine from rockers is . Posting on this mod some time back from Roger King I think ?Run the engine breather into this one.You need a thick alloy cam cover to take a thread.

Then other strait job(outlet) out the back of cam cover to catch tank ,and get the tank as high up as poss.

Not run my one at Goodwood yet but seems to work fine . Nothing getting up or in to the catch tank and used to always after a sporty blat .used to throw away loads of expensive Mobile One but not now ,think the thicker oil helps .

I played around with all sorts of arrangements and found that the best was for the crankcase breather to go into the rocker cover and for the breather from the rocker cover to go to the catch tank. This breathes well but does not deposit large amounts of oil in the catch tank.

Yes never thought it was wrong putting in what I thought was the best oil but after taking it to a rolling road specialist . His advice was the Valvoline racing 20/50 and seems to do the trick. Mobile on too thin for an old design was his recomend.

The X-flow engine is a design from the 1960's so well before any of the super slippery oils and synthetics were dreamt of, so a top quality oil of the corect grade, ie 20/50 will see you right, OK so you may lose a few HP at the limit, how many times is that?

 

There is a fuel pump mounting blanking plate, assuming you have an electric pump, availble which has a baffle which stops so much oil being thrown in to the oil seperator above the fuel pump lobe on the camshaft.

 

There is an O ring fitted to the spigot which mounts the oil seperator to the block, if this has failed it will leak, a new O ring could be all you need, and my crankcase breather exits under the rear axle via a long length if pipe, not ok for tracks but there you go I don't take it on track.

I have found a tiny hole in the sump, so small It took 5 minutes to see a little drop of oil.

Question is, to patch the sump, should I get it welded or a patch braised on to cure this?
