Petrol Smell/Leak

SPW

Recommended Posts

I'm getting a strong smell of petrol from the rear of the car particulary when pushing on through the corners. No signs of any leaks from the filler cap but looking under the car there looks like evidence of petrol having leaked down the side of the tank in several places ☹️.

Next step is to strip out the floor in the boot to check for leaks - I'm guessing it could be from the breather. Has anyone had anything similar or any ideas on likely cause?

Thanks

Steve

Recently saw a roadsports 1600 K series with a similar problem. Took the boot floor out and IIRC the return pipe had perished and split just as it entered the tank 😳 Quick job to sort out a new line and get back to blatting.

Check your fuel pipe mine exploded at 7,000 miles and 7 years..........! other have failed int he engine bay and tourched the car as a result........!

If te pie does fail then you'll be stranded...also if original the clips are sods to get of so not a road side job! WOrth changing every 5 years or so just to be sure. You will need to remove the center console to access the routing for the pipe as well. Caterham do like their cable ties........!

Hose will cast about £6 plus clips.....small price to pay for peace of mind..........takes around 2 hours to fit first time!

I recently noticed a strong smell of petrol in the garage, and it turned out that the small fuel line into the fuel rail had split. The smell would fade when not under pressure, and then be quite apparent as soon as you started the car up. It looks like the tube was rubbing on the chassis to cause the split.

I hope you don’t have the same problem as the replacement part from CC was £66 😳.

Good luck in your search.

Had a similar problem with my car 3 years ago. The smell of petrol got really strong at fill up. In the end the return pipe was replaced and the problem resolved. I off to check the fuel rail supply line for wear!

Flying across the fens 😬
