Running without bonnet, legal or not?

I'm currently experimenting with different air filter types to try and get something that suits my new

flat-slide set up. I don't want to go hacking bigger holes in my bonnet until I know I have to IYSWIM. What's the score with running on public roads with your engine exposed? I suppose I can leave it till dark and try not to be too blatant. Just wondered if anyone knew??

I have seen lorries bomb along the M56 (I guess between different bits of a truck factory ) with nothing but a bare chassis, the drivetrain inc exposed engine and a seat with a bloke with goggles and a big grin.

Don't the hot rod community do this all the time . Just do it. I can't imagine you being stopped let alone what they would charge you with.

I seem to recall that as long as all your drive belts/moving parts are covered, it is legal.

Just look at the beetles with their arses hanging out (Baja's) - they just cover the drive belt.
