blade_runner
Have any of the BEC boys had gearbox trouble? I have a LSD which seems to have a fair bit of backlash, (it clonks when comming off and on the power) and now I have problems with 6th gear when under power its fine as soon as I lift off it jumps in and out of gear, ( damaged or worn dogs I suspect) as this is the second transmission problem I have had in about 3k miles the only thing that has not been touched is the Diff..... could the backlash in the Diff be putting the honda transmission under too much stress? can the diffs backlash be adjusted easliy? the car had a new crown wheel and pinion before I bought it. any ideas? Mike Bees
Is it an AP Suretrak? They do tend to clonk as you go on/off the power, no matter how gently. (Cue a queue of people saying their's doesn't...) Mike

Mike Bees
Bugger. Mine doesn't when you're pressing on, but pottering around it does. Mike
Sheds Moderator
Mine knocks like hell in lower gears at light throttle/constant speed as this is where it can rattle from one end of the backlash to the other. When driven with intent it's nice and quiet (relatively) and just goes "clack clack" when changing gear.

stevefoster
Ok, I own up to mine grumbling a bit when slow on off the power but not any knocking / clonking. Hard to tell sometimes what is gear whine / noise and LSD I think. caterhamnut
Confirm that our AP performs similarly to BOSS description. Big change from our normal diff when we first had it fitted, but seems to work ok 😬 Makes it more fun/more of a challenge to try and drive really smoothly in 'normal' conditions - once you realise when it is going to happen, you can 'absorb' it with your driving style....what IS this film on Ch4?? 😳 😬 HUGE UPDATE ALMOST WITH VIDEO here 70,000miles in 3 years Edited by - angus&tessa on 18 Nov 2004 23:59:45 Edited by - angus&tessa on 18 Nov 2004 23:59:
david nelson
I have an AP LSD and was told it made loads of clunks and bangs. Picked the car up from - - and thought nothing of the cluncking at slow speeds. Some months later traveling at about the national speed limit got this vibration under my 🙆🏻. Well the prop was missing one bolt, and the 3 others were loose. Its been tightened up and now there is minimal clunking or noise. might be worth checking David
Robster
Sounds more like gearbox with the jumping out of gear. There is always some lash on the diff nose, if it's a long way out, you tend to get a shriek or whine on overun as the teeth don't mesh properly. blade_runner
I'm not sure of the make of the diff, till I extract it.. its the gearbox thats playing up... but I wondered if the backlash its stressing the gearbox? STEVE GILBERT
Steve I don't think that's your problem. The car's xmission is nicely designed overall with that rubber prop coupling. Does yours have that being the No1 car? Steve See My Caterham Fireblade Here.
blade_runner
Yeah Steve, I have the rubber donut coupling... yours and stews seem to have little if any backlash, I just wondered if this might be an issue? 'Pinky Pics' here

bonzz
If it ain't broke - don't fix it, I've driven a bike cat, and with that racket going on, so I'm surprised you can hear it the LSD clonking, sure it aint the exhaust?
blade_runner
Yeah the Lsd works fine... but is it stressing the gearbox???? 'Pinky Pics' here
