Miles Taylor
Can anyone please explain about these. Are they worth upgrading to from new on a new R400? What is the difference compared to the standard Caterham on fitted when new. What is the cost? Milo
rgrigsby
It depends on your plans for the car, combined with a rolling road session an Emerald ECU may improve the driveability/power delivery of a new R400 but it's not 100% guarrenteed. But what it will do is open up the door to lots of other choices and upgrades in the future. TBH unless you either having problems with the standard ECU/Map or are planning to carry out some upgrades it's probably not something to rush into. Myles
Always leave some room for upgradeitis If you fit all the toys from the word go, what will you do in the future (and how will you know how effective the toys have been)... Bob Corb
Theres no reason you cant unlock the stock R400 ECU and modify that. The MBE units on the R400 are designed to be user modified. At least then you dont have to buy a new wiring loom too. SBD will add the laptop interface to your existing loom for about £50. You download the software for free from SBDs website and away you go. Okay the PIN code isn't easy to come by, but I think there are a few out there who would let you in on the secret. Worst case you delete the ECU memory and start over. I've got a base map that would get you moving... If you had a Rover MEMs ECU (i.e. old SLR or K series roadsport car usually) then the Emerald is great due to the quick plug swap and the good support that Emerald can offer. dino ferrana
If you swop to an Emerald ECU on a brand new R400 you will lose the warranty on the engine. Edited by - dino ferrana on 6 Feb 2004 12:40:
