Pierre Gillet
I tried to remove the nuts on the exhaust primaries studs (car is a 1.6K), and found that instead of the nuts, the studs themselves are coming. Is it OK, or is there a way to prevent this to happen? Once a stud with its nut still in its original position has gone, what should be done: try to remove the nut and replace (by hand) the stud on the cylinder head, then the nut, or put the stud back as it is, driving it with the blocked nut? Joe 90
You should try to remove the nut. Then you can put the stud back in with some threadlock to stop it coming undone. It may be best to replace the old stud and nut unless they come apart easily. Starting all over at 40.
John Howe
Once you have freed the nut from the stud, add a second nut as a locking nut and then tighten the stud into location, back off the locking nut and finish tightening the original nut - loctite, or similar helps. If you have the standard branch manifold you might find it a usefull time to cut the length of the studs down, as they over long and therefore prevent the removal of the branch manifold if left in situ. Pierre Gillet
Thank you. In fact I want to remove the branch manifold to replace it by the Caterham 4 2 1 (which can cope with the steering column, car is LHD). I wish to be able to come back to the branch manifold for our MOTs Pierre
P Brews
I couldn't get my 4-1 manifold in without removing some of the Studs. Last time I changed it, I had the studs shortened, much better now!
