Type 9 gearbox Identification

As we know, earlier Sevens used the Ford Type 9 gearbox, not from a Sierra but from the 2.8 & 3 litre Capri, because, I believe, it had slightly better ratios and bigger bearings, but can anyone tell me if there are any identifying features on the outside of the box to quickly tell which is which?  Was the input shaft slightly longer, necessitating the use of the ali. spacer or am I wrong on this?

There is a plate on the front of the box held on with 3 bolts not present on the std box.

I think it originated from the 2WD XR4i

Long shaft v6 gearbox was used as it had better ratios

and the nose on the first motion shaft was clipped by istr 11mm to suit K series application.

3.0 Capri was a 4 speed.

some very early V6 boxes didn't have the stub shaft they ran the normal layshaft and needle rollers

Thank you both for your input, it has sorted out my gearbox, which is not an XR4i box, but a standard Sierra box - sadly.
