Indicator issue

Hi everyone. We own a 1982 Super Seven GT. We took her out on Saturday only to discover that the indicators stopped operating, however all other lights work including the hazard lights. My thinking is that it is either the ‘flick switch’ on the dash, or a bad earth. Forums talk about fuse no 12, however this model does not have a fuse box, but a circuit breaker system (two little black boxes with red reset buttons on the LH engine bay bulkhead).

My electrical knowledge is poor, can anyone assist in layman’s terms with a solution?

Thank you in advance for any help!

Flick the hazard light on/off a few times with a very positive push to off, it's the most common cause of the fault you're seeing. Fingers crossed ...

Edited to add that clearly I can't type fast enough!

Hi Pantha.

I have a car of the same year, and I can vouch that the resettable circuit breakers are a source of problems in the lights dept.

If the much touted hazard switch thing doesn't get the it going, try removing and refitting the circuit breakers, also if you are doing this check the the female sockets aren't distorted, (on the firewall) if they are too slack it can create an intermittent fault, some work with a small screwdriver can close any which are slack, and if possible use a tie wrap to hold the little bastard in place, as they can become loose, and after 40 years not a surprise, how do I know all this? been there, done that......40 long and happy years together, sometimes.

On these older cars the flasher and the hazard units are little metal boxes in behind the dash over by the fuel gauge, where there is also the voltage regulator for the good old Smiths instruments, if yours hasn't been too mucked about with, they do not fit into a socket.

Have fun, and good on you.

PM me if you want, I see you are a bit fresh around here, thanks for dropping in, I hope you enjoy your car, they really are a different raw driving experience from a modern computer on wheels, X box car.

Nigel.

Hi all

Sorry for the really slow response but thank you all so much for your replies - what a great community!

We worked our way systematically through the suggestions, replacing the hazard light switch and the indicator switch along the way, all to no avail.  We have just replaced the flasher unit itself and that seems to have resolved the issue.

Thank you all again so much for your help - we really do appreciate it.
