Ignition light

The red ignition light doesn't come on when the ignition is turned on, apart from a dodgy lamp, any suggestions as to where to start looking for the fault and any potential problems running it like it is?  Auto electrics not one of my strong points.

What model of Seven?

Is it a lamp in the rev counter, or a separate lamp unit in the dash?

Do you have a wiring diagram and a multimeter?

Has it ever worked?

Does everything else work fine?

Any recent work on the car?

It's an unusual circuit. And there are several known vulnerabilities in Sevens, including the variety of alternators and problems when the warning light is an LED rather than an incandescant.

Check all of the connections at the alternator and try to find the Brown/Yellow wire.

Measure the battery voltage at rest, minimum during cranking, and at 3,000 rpm, and post the values. The last of those will check whether the alternator is charging properly.

I had the opposite issue. 

Ignition light behaved as normal, extinguishing when running but no, or inadequate charge going to the battery.

In that case I'd include a look at the wiring and contacts at the lamp unit in the first round of checks.

And test the bulb while you're there.
