ACFowles
So, toying with the idea of different side mirrors.I've purchased one of these https://www.carbuilder.com/uk/round-clip-on-mirror-with-flat-plate-mounting as I've heard that they can be attached the the windscreen stanchion. I've had a go and the thickness of the stanchion means that I cannot fit the rubber strips. It's metal-to-metal contact only.Is this correct, or is there a better way? I want to do this right as the last thing I want is a side mirror flying off at speed with unknown and undesirable consequences. Thanks all. Leadership Team SLR No.77 Posted July 26, 2021 Leadership Team Share Posted July 26, 2021 Are you wanting to "permanently" fix mirrors to the stanchions? The usual method is to use an SPA style mirror and utilise the middle of the three stanchion/windscreen mounting holes plus drill and tap and additional hole in the stanchion. An alternative if retaining the doors is to use the "Eccles" mirror mounts with SPA mirrors, a search of the forum should find plenty of details.Stu. ACFowles
Thanks StuI like the idea of using the existing stanchion fixings, but not the SPA style mirror. I really like the look of an "old fashioned" circular chrome mirror. The Carbuilder mirror, being convex, is definitely an improvement on the existing items. David aka Blue7
Metal against metal should be ok but I would drill a couple of shallow recesses in the stanchion for the grub screws to locate. Alternatively you could just replace the rubber strips with a thinner rubber or build up layers of black insulation tape.David
ChrisC
DPR do a special stanchion mount for SPA mirrors. Very neat and very very stable solution. No drilling of the stanchion required. Only down side is you can't open the doors fully.I had problems with the "Eccles" mounts, they pressed into the side screen. I suspect my frame inside the door isn't flat, and the hinge redesign (2017 ish) also hasn't helped.
Leadership Team Toughie Posted July 28, 2021 Leadership Team Share Posted July 28, 2021 I have very similar mirrors on my car. The clamping method (two grub screws) is the same, but the clamp looks different. Yours appears to have what looks like a metal divider down the length, with a bit of rubber on the opposite side.Mine has a much wider opening, with a plastic spacer to fill the gap.I've driven mine on track and on road many miles and never had one of the mirrors come off. I simply clamp the grub screws tightly straight onto the stanchion, quite tightly.
