Paul_Hedley
I'm in the process of moving to an electronic speedo sensor from the current gearbox cable drive. Once I've switched over, does anyone know of a blanking cover/screw cap that would seal up the old cable drive from the gearbox? I don't want to leave it open, but leaving the old drive unit attached isn't great either.ThanksPaul
Member Jonathan Kay Posted February 25, 2019 Member Share Posted February 25, 2019 Is that using a new wheel sensor?Have you considered fitting an electronic drive from the gearbox? That would be easier to fit and wouldn't leave the hole.Burton Power Ford electronic speedo sensor REVFSS + Revotec electronic speedo adaptor: Ford gearbox REVT9-A should work.If you want to plug up the hole you could get a blank disc the same diameter and thickness as the original fitting and use the original circlip. It has been suggested that a 2p piece might fit. Which would be considerably cheaper than this dedicated blanking assembly.Jonathan
Brightonuk
LOL I bought the latter (but it does work)
Paul_Hedley
Thanks chaps. I had thought about trying to convert the gearbox drive for an electronic output to the new speedo (the reason for all of this is a new Racetech speedo to replace my non-configurable original which is, after a wheel change, miles out). Not sure how I would do the configuration of the pulses per mile from the gearbox output.Fitting would be easier though, as I'm having to make a bracket to mount the sender on the front hub - probably using the brake caliper mounts. Unfortunately, the Caterham part is the wrong spec for the racetech sender. I had thought of using the the steering arm mounting point, but I can't get a bracket to sit properly there, with my limited metalworking skills.Paul
Member Jonathan Kay Posted February 26, 2019 Member Share Posted February 26, 2019 Not sure how I would do the configuration of the pulses per mile from the gearbox output. You don’t need an accurate initial setting. Set it to anything and then measure the displayed speed and the true speed (easiest by GPS) and then adjust the setting accordingly. Alastair B
Probably too late as you have invested in a new speedo unit. You can though get mechanical speedo's calibrated for turns per mile by specialist companies where wheel/tyre changes mean calibration is out , JDO instruments is one that I have used and they were good. Their website gives you the instructions you need to do and they will re-calibrate the speedo for you. This way you can keep the original look and branding of the original speedo. Wonder if you could still go around this route and get your money back on the Racetech speedo?
Paul_Hedley
Thanks Alastair - I had looked briefly at this possibility, but it seems to cost almost as much to have the thing recalibrated as a new one (with up to date electronics in it). And I've also managed to get the new one pre-set to my current mileage, so OEM branding apart, I should have 'in keeping' instruments, but much better performing than the original fit.I have also just discovered that contrary to what I was originally told, the new sender is actually M8, so should fit the Caterham bracket. Will save me a job and some headaches ....
Alastair B
Sounds like a plan, good luck with the installation
