Currently set-up to run in Midland Hill Climb Championship Class D - Modified Production. Could be reverted to Roadgoing Class or ideal track-day car.

Briefly:

  • 235bhp 1580 Hayabusa: The engine was originally built by RLM Racing (it was fully refreshed early 2018 by Cougar Engineering: during the refresh the gearbox was checked and fresh ratios fitted where needed)

  • MBE ECU and 24V starting set-up

History: This is a Series 3 Caterham built and registered in 1998 that has a fantastic competition history being initially owned by multiple British Hill Climb Champion Scott Moran – who was very successful in the Midland Hill Climb Championship Roadgoing Class in it. It was then owned by Tim Cross who also ran it successfully in the MHC before selling it to Ireland. I bought it and repatriated it from Ireland and refreshed it to use occasionally before buying the GWR Raptor. I then sold the Caterham to Joy Hoyle who shared it with Roger Moran.

Roger removed the K-Series engine and fitted the Hayabusa engine and paddle shift and he and Joy ran the car very successfully in the Roadgoing class of the MHC, winning class B1 in 2015.

I purchased the car in mid 2017 to compete in the Midland Championship Class D ‘Modified Production’ (ModProd) Class. I had the car fully refurbished over the winter of 2017-18; the engine and gearbox was stripped, checked and refreshed, the car was repainted and the roll cage re-powder coated plus the replacement carbon seat was fitted. Lovely!

All of the roadgoing ‘extras’ were removed in order to run in the ‘Mod Prod’ class and it now weighs in at 435Kg. However, all of the items needed to run it as a road-going car are included in the sale including lights (headlamps/rear lights), wiring and an ‘as new’ Bailey Morris’ Bike engined Kit car reverse gearbox, plus larger fuel tank and spare seats and belts and other assorted spares.

I was guilty of a slight indiscretion at Prescott in September 2018, arguing with the recticel at Ettores (oops!) and damaging the nearside front chassis. This required the fitting of a new ‘long’ front by Arch Motors. At the same time and to do a proper job, we have replaced the front wishbones (both sides) and all of the steering joints, tie-bars, nuts and bolts, anti-roll bar bushes, the steering rack, steering column and detachable steering wheel boss plus the front side panels, which have been repainted. So, the car looks absolutely spot on again – totally refreshed and gleaming.

It has always been a very competitive car and it could achieve even better results in Mod Prod with a lighter and quicker driver!

My best Times in Mod Prod on the Midland hills are:

Prescott 43.30

Shelsley Walsh 30.05

Loton Park 52.38

This represents a great buy for an enthusiastic driver - you simply couldn’t build one as good as this for anywhere near the asking price.

It is on display at the Race Retro Show Stoneleigh on the Bugatti Owners’ Club Stand.

Price: £26,750.00
