virden
My 1996 Super Sprint with ford four speed box and live axle, has developed a leak around the end of box, so I assume it is the seal on the output shaft?1. Is it an engine out job to replace?2. Is replacement of the seal an amateur DIY job? Having taken the top plate off the tunnel I can see the leak has been going on for some time, from the oil spray pattern I am now convinced that the leak has come from the front of the box. Does the speedo drive leak, if so is it easy to fix? Car has done 26,000 miles
Wrightpayne
You can do the speedo drive seal on a ford/caterham 5/6 speed with it still in the car so would expect the 4 speed is the same. I'll be doing the output shaft seal on my 6 speed with it in the car this winter, though I'll have to remove the sierra diff to get the prop shaft out of the way.Do you have an Escort haynes manual? If not try google as there is usually a PDF copy somewhere on the internet. Ian
elie boone
The rear seal can be replaced in situ, just un bolt the prop shaft from the diff and lay it on top of the diff then it should give you enough room to change the seal for the 4 speed speedo if you have a long cockpit then it should be possible, on a short cockpit the floor is closed under the transmission so it might be more difficult. Brightonuk
Is the leak from rear seal or the Speedo outputAs I just fixed a leak on my T9 that originated from the Speedo output (where the angle drive connects)I got a blanking plate from Burton sealed it up and am using a GPS Speedo option, might be a bit drastic but cant risk the wife yelling that here is oil on the driveway again
virden
Thanks all,I am off on hols for a week, but have cleaned everything as best I can and topped up the oil, so on return should be able to determine where the leak is.Haynes manual in post
auyt
Good thread as a trigger for me to replace my speedo seal while the box (4 speed) is out, replaced the others, didn’t think of the speedo,
