Lotus S3 Xflow Starter Ring

Having done a 1000 miles touring UK, my starter stopped engaging at the docks on my way home.

Dismantling the starter I have found that the starter ring has come off the flywheel & therefore an engine & gearbox removal jobbie.

But how does the ring fit/is secured, onto the flywheel ? And is it easy to put back ?

It's crimped on, you need to heat the ring gear and cool the flywheel, you can opt for extra security by drilling in between ring gear and flywheel, put some tread in and put a headless screw in it. Do this 4 times and have the flywheel balanced again.

I think it was my fault, It was raining Sunday & I tried the windscreen washer for the first time @70mph and hit the starter button instead, they are very close together under the dash

Dont think so, Scotts hasnt got the gear, its flywheel in freezer, ring in the oven & then finish off on charcoal barbie

The flywheel and ring gear on the K-Series in my 21 parted company.  Not sure about the cause.

Probably worth fitting a new starter ring if you are having to remove the engine.

Last time I changed one (many many years ago) I used an oxy/acetylene torch to heat the ring up and some metal tongs to place it on the flywheel before it got too cold.  Appreciating that getting access to oxy/acetylene is not easy these days might be worth paying a friendly old school garage to fit it for you.
