Jonathan T
The ones I'm looking up are frequently ordered with a set of pry bars, a lump hammer and a wasted weekend - They look ideal!
Member Jonathan Kay Posted October 27, 2015 Member Share Posted October 27, 2015 Just realised that I wrote was ambiguous: I meant the right expletives! There is a glossary somewhere on the site...Jonathan
pugwash
Whole new language required when you get to the diff!
Jonathan T
Before my kit arrived and I was clearing space in the garage I did practice for the diff by dropping a car battery on my foot once a week for a month, so that part might not be so bad. griffchris
I'm right at the end of my build now, installed the diff 2 or 3 weeks back and to my surprise the diff top bolt slid straight in without even a tickle from a rubber mallet. Not wishing to gloat but I feel like I have missed out on a time-honoured rite of passage.......
Jonathan T
Sounds like you installed it upside down.... (joking..)
griffchris
Hang on a sec, now you come to mention it............(runs off to check) ;) P.S Genuinely, you might be on to something there, as the bottom bolts were quite hard work, and I probably spent a good 1 to 2 hours getting these lined up and shimmed....... Rattie
That old "metric chassis never matched the Sierra diff hole spacing" issue seems to have gone away with the move to the BMW diff carrier.I'll be helping a mate build his 360R in a while, so may have to insert a barrier plate somehow, to give him the full build experience that he will otherise miss out on.I assume the front top suspension bolts are still a nighmare?Martyn
Jonathan T
No - I haven't had any issues with those - others at the front are tight but doable. I've got some 200mm ball ended hex sockets so my working angles are good. There's a picture here.Good luck!
Rattie
Ah, that's better than my lashed up tooling. I'll add a set of those to his shopping list.
Jonathan T
The only thing I've been caught out on is the 22mm ball joint nut that secures the upright and wing stay. Mine is a 1/2 socket but the ratchet wont fit in the gap and there's limited options, a 3/8 22mm fits fine though. Most (all?) other jobs have been handled by the 200 piece Halfords kit I've got and their torque wrenches.
Rattie
IIRC I used a crows foot spanner on a long extension to torque that kind of piece.
