Hi, My 1989 cross flow is giving me more problems, i bought a new toggle switch and a new 30/am battery is fully charged,it has a starter button,  i have tried various tests with a volt meter car electronics are not my strong points, can anyone recommend car  repair engineer near Rickmansworth, someone said the timing belt may have gone does the crossflow have a timing belt?, any advice would be appreciated thanks in advance.

Is this a new set up or did you encounter a problem, i guess that the toggles switch is used to trigger the relay. Are you sure the new relay is exactly the same ? Relay's come in make or brake versions and there is also what is known a light relay. Make sure all conections are right. Maybe all the power whent trough the switch causing the blow of the fuse ?

BTW i use a 70 amp relay to switch all electrics apart from side lights, brake lights and radiator fan

I have traced  the wiring with the voltmeter from the  12V.  battery to the toggle switch one of the wires is damaged which i going to replace, hope it does the trick, they relay is  the same 30A with 5 connectors, i don't know enough about car electrical to change to a 70 amp relay to switch?, thanks for your advice

Hi SM25T, the problem is i cant get a spark from the plugs or the coil, i took it out for a short drive it just stopped i thought it had run out of fuel?, i got it towed home its been in the garage since, i have tried the wiring it all seems ok apart from it keeps blowing one 20amp fuse, thanks Jonathan for email.

No timing belt but I once had similar symptoms - engine turned over but valves did not open.

It turned out the Woodruffe key holding the front pulley onto the crankshaft had come adrift and as a result the cranksaft rotated but the cam didn't...

Did some (non-fatal) damage to a piston and we had to replace a bent pushrod but we were very lucky, especially as this happened at around 6,000rpm while on a rolling road. On a crossflow the valves go straight up and down in the cylinder head, so even if hit by a piston, damage is likely to be minimal to all parties (usually...). One of the joys of this great old engine!

Hope that whetever it is, you can get it sorted quickly and inexpensively.

Andy
