Harry Flatters
Damn, damn and golly - refitting my front discs to the hub, I've stripped one of the threads in the alloy hub. Never even got it near the torque setting!. Has this happend to any one else? If so, what did you do about it? Failing this has anyone got one or even two alloy hubs surplus to requirements? *arrowright*Harry Flatters *arrowright* AKA Steve Mell of Su77on Se7ens

NeilF
Hi, how about putting a thread insert into the hub like a Helicoil or a Keensert? Should save a few £'s and give you a better thread into the bargain. HTH Neil
AMMO
Steve Is that Sutton in Surrey? I used to rent a workshop in Surbiton from an engineering company who used to specialise in thread repairs. Can give you their number if you want. I also noticed when messing around with discs and hubs that the bolts were a bit on the short side on my car. Have made a note to fit longer bolts as part of my brake mods. I'll probably fit 12.9 cap heads as I found it difficult to access the stock bolts even with some thin-wall sockets. The longer bolt will make the threads more difficult to strip. AMMO
StewartG
I.ve fitted longer cap head bolt with a nylock nut on the back ( in the recess in the hubs ) doesn't matter if the thread in the hub is sripped then!
Harry Flatters
Thanks for the suggestions. Helicoil it might be then. I'm told that they are about £10 each, so all eight done would be the less than the price of one new hub . AMMO, yes I am in Sutton, Surrey - do you have the number of that company in surbiton. I'll have to stick with hex bolts though 'cos I'm running wheel speed sensors on the front wheels and capheads will be mis-read as the sensor will pick up the edge of the socket hole then the socket hole itself then the edge again. *arrowright*Harry Flatters *arrowright* AKA Steve Mell of Su77on Se7ens Edited by - Harry Flatters on 19 Jan 2003 11:12:
TomBerlin
Buy the helicoil kits and repair them youself. Much cheaper and you get to keep the tools.
Peter T
Steve, sutton rebore in Lind road will repair with Helicoils, i had on done there years ago! Would only helicoil the stripped threads, not all of them, as removing metal is required prior to fitment, and this could weaken your hub if all eight are done! Good luck! AMMO
Steve I have two numbers for you. BLR Engineering 0208 399 6617 for thread repairs. Speak to Trevor or Ian. Jones Industrial Fasteners, also in Surbiton, for new nuts and bolts if you need them. 0208 390 4818. AMMO
R2D2
I bought alloy hubs from Caterham about a year ago and they don't supply new bolts nor do they advise that the bolts alraedy fitted to the cast iron hubs don't have enough thread length to take the torque. There isn't even a bit of paper showing what torque to use with the alloy hub. Not very bright really, you would think that they would shape up and offer the right bolts and torque figures. As everyone says fit helicoils, longer bots and some Loctite.
