Kal-El
I will shortly be fitting a VVC head to my 1800 EU3 car. I have the newer EU3 style cam cover, and it appears to be distributorless. I would like to use an earlier EU2 type cam cover (non-vvc). What if anything will I need to consider in terms of plug leads and coils with this setup? Many thanks P. oilyhands
If the engine is EU3 then it will need plug top coils which attach to the cam cover. The EU2 cam cover would require you to use the EU2 block mounted coilpack and long leads which will not easily marry up to the loom. Kal-El
Hi Oily, So if I order a VVC mk1 block mounted coil pack and corresponding mk1 VVC leads this should do it? Loom should be ok as we are making a custom loom to match up to the MS2 ECU. Are the plugs the same? Also, where on the block does the coil pack mount? Thanks for your help. Stationary M25 Traveller
On EU3 coil pack sits on top of two of the plugs. Each has an HT lead to one other plug
oilyhands
The coil pack points under the inlet manifold and has two separate 3 pin plugs. Oily
Kal-El
Will I be able to mount this on my block or will it need to be modified? Also, and lastly (I think) where can I get the connectors that attach to the coils? Any ideas? Thanks again P
oilyhands
All's the blocks are drilled and tapped for the coils, the connectors are AMP, or scrounge them from a scrap loom. You really should consider the plug top coils, the leads to the plugs are very very long and prone to leakage. Oily
elan_fan
Not cheap and crucially also a bit heavy, but qed and others do a sagem vx coil and bracket that goes on the back of the head. When I converted from eu2 head with dizzy to vvc head I used the later vvc coil on plug.
Kal-El
So is it possible for me to have the older style cam cover, but still have coil on plug? I assumed they wouldn't fit. What I am trying to achieve is the new VVC head, older style cam cover but still maintain wasted spark type ignition. Perhaps this setup from QED would be best? Kal-El
Ok so the GM/Sagem twin coil from QED sounds like it will work, however where can I find the corresponding 4 pin connector to hook it up to the ECU?
elan_fan
No, coil on plug goes with later cam cover. Sagems use a junior power timer plug. The reason I went with the later style even though its not the best for looks is, the coils were easy to wire as I used a standard harness on the coils and then altered the loom to connect using econoseal connector from polevolt. Other reasons are weight and the fact that the plastic cover keeps the water at bay. None of this "my plug wells are full of water/shiz" shiz
elan_fan
And polevolt or trigger wheels or even qed for the jpt connectors
myothercarsa2cv
Surely it's cheaper and better to change the cam cover? If they're the same as a non-VVC I'll send you one, just pay postage...
