De Dion tube question

About the suspension position.

On my 21 there is two position for fitting the suspension, one in the middle of the tube, the second underneath the DE Dion tube.

The suspension was originally fitted on "underneath" setting

It seems the position in the middle of the tube is a slight angle compared to the underneath position which is straight down

Why 2 positions? Effect on handling? reduce size of damper?

Is it something historical?

Cheers

Jack

It's historical the earlier cars used shorter dampers mounted through the tube there where many of these tubes in stock at Arch when the suspension w as changed to longer dampers so the existing tubes where modified by welding a small tube underneath . When these started to peel away a further mod was made by adding strengthening gussets.
