Rj52car
Hello, We are building a 1.4 Classic and are ready to put the diff in. There are plenty of other jobs to keep us busy so were wondering if anyone would like to help us with the Diff on Saturday ? (I understand that asking if someone would 'like' to fit a diff is an oxymoron). We can offer tea, coffee, biscuits, cakes etc ... bacon sandwiches maybe ? For anyone who knows the area, we're between Chelmsford and Ongar near the Cuckoo pub. Hugh (age 13) and Philip (age more than 13)
Grubbster
I hope you get a volunteer to help - for me this was without doubt the worst part of the build experience ☹️ Is it the BMW diff or the Sierra unit? If it is the Sierra one make sure you screw in each bolt beforehand to make sure they go in - the holes in mine were full of crud and needed to be cleaned out with a tap - not the best thing to discover once you actually have it in place
Rj52car
Hello Grubbster, It's the BMW diff, thanks for the tip, we'll check.
wjblundell
I found grinding a long taper on the long top bolt an advantage in locating it through the diff carrier. I think most people have used a certain amount of elbow grease when fitting it. Good luck with that and the rest of the build Bill
myothercarsa2cv
Use of a hammer is recommended But really, if you take your time, get everything ready, and check everything off the car , it can't go wrong! Put the prop in first So you managed to get a 1.4K then? Lucky you! They didn't have any when I got mine, so I 'had' to upgrade
Rj52car
Hello MOC2CV, We ordered a 1.4 and after a couple of months waiting I wondered about changing to 1.6. It turns out that all the 1.6K engines have gone, so if someone orders a 1.6 K, Caterham swap the pistons and liners of a 1.4. Is that really all there is to it ? myothercarsa2cv
I guess so! Seems like a lot of effort though... The benefits of a 1.4 over a 1.6 are less tax, and same power if you spend a few quid with Oily The 1.4K with a 6sp box is supposed to be one of the best combos in a
Rj52car
Hmm, ours is a 1.4K with a 5 spd gearbox. Strange isn't it, upgraditis really does exist ! I'll try and resist at least until the build is finished. Was the Supersport kit for the 1.4 any good ?
Richard K
Hello Philip, I just about know which end of the spanner to hold but have no experience of fitting a diff Not doing anything on Sat. Rj52car
Thank you Richard and Paul, The diff went in ! It took about 2 hours ... but that was including coffee breaks, chatting and poking around THREE 7's. Thank you again, it made a nasty job enjoyable. DJ.
I'm glad it went well for you I spent today removing my noisy diff and replacing it with the help of my wife and daughter. I remember thinking as I fitted the first time, "hope I never have to do this again!" I hope yours stays put for many years Duncan
Captainbilos
Philip & Hugh, It was good to meet you both yesterday - I had an enjoyable morning, which made me want to build another 7. Good luck with the rest of the build and if you need to borrow the torque wrench and socket for the hubs, just ping me an e-mail.
