I've a '91 HPC and was initially querying the advice I was given to run LRP(recommended by Caterham showroom!!??!!). I was advised by the various friendly chappies on this forum to go with Super unleaded, although there's no discernable difference compared to std unleaded. I spoke to Jim Whiting about this last week, and he also recommended that you should run the highest octane you can. Not a very technical answer, but hope it helps. PACR Posted October 13, 2000 Share Posted October 13, 2000 I think the theory is that LRP has the same Octane rating as Super and that it is more readily available than Super and may be cheaper. The crap in LRP will do no good for a CAT conv. but if you haven't got one won't do any damage. Not sure about the detonation suppression that LRP has - this might be a good thing... Peter Carmichael Posted October 13, 2000 Share Posted October 13, 2000 Octane rating is a measure of resistance to knock in calibrated test engines (RON or MON) http://www.motorcycle.com/mo/mcnuts/fuelron.html. The only thing you have to worry about is that the test engines are completely unlike modern engines. All our pump fuels are graded by RON, where MON is a much more relevant rating. There is nothing to say that two 97 RON fuels (LRP and Super) are to have the same MON rating, although they won't be much different. The important thing to discover is whether the timing curve of the HPC was modified to cope with the Webers? The Webers are providing better cylinder filling than the standard fit plenum injection. How is the HPC ignition managed? Is it electronic? Is it 2D, 3D? (I think I know it isn't 3D). Whatever, running a higher octane rating fuel will provide more of a safety margin before knock develops. For track use I don't think it would be sensible to contemplate anything else. Matt Prior Posted October 13, 2000 Share Posted October 13, 2000 I use Super in my HPC ('94, QED mods for [reputed] 220bhp; let's call it 200bhp+). Peter explains it far more admirably than I could (despite a degree in Automotive Engineering I really couldn't tell you much about MON), suffice it to say that with my HPC's high state of tune, and the fact that everywhere it goes, it does so with a damned good thrashing, then Super is worth the extra cost for the security it offers. It may be my imagination, but there also seemed to be less hesitancy at lower revs with Super than Premium (which I used for my first week with the car). Although my car is mapped for UL, it gives a bigger margin before detonation occurs. My map is pretty near the limit cos the crappy fuel in Italy caused detonation. I've never tried octane boosters and I'm a little dubious about them. Best solution is to bring the timing back on the map (you need a laptop and the software) but if you do find you're stuck with crap petrol, keep the engine on cam try not to make it work hard (ie stay off full throttle) as the detonation gets worse when the engine is under load. Not ideal but it got me through my Italy trip. Roger King Posted October 13, 2000 Share Posted October 13, 2000 Dave, Assuming that your HPC has not been modified in any way whatsoever, you should have a compression ratio of 10.5:1 and should be OK on standard unleaded fuel. We have however seen a couple of mysterious cases of detonation on HPC engines to your spec. My feeling is that the mapping is a little close to the limit and if this is coupled with slightly dodgy fuel (it does sometimes get on the market) this may explain the problem. Therefore it would be sensible to use super or LRP for hard driving or track use. Without a catalytic converter, come the next fuel protest, you will have the luxury of being able to fill up with standard unleaded, super unleaded or LRP (but not diesel!) 2D mapping simply increases the ignition advance as the revs rise (for the pedantic, I am aware that it can also retard it, particularly at peak torque). This is simply an electronic way of doing what the distributor on a Supersprint engine does mechanically and it means that at any given rpm, say 4000, the ignition advance will always be the same figure, whatever the throttle position. 3D mapping adds an extra sensor, usually to measure throttle position. This position is taken into account when choosing an ignition advance figure. The practical result of this is, that at our given 4000rpm, the ignition advance will vary according to throttle position, typically showing considerably more advance at light throttle than full throttle. This allows more efficient use of fuel, better throttle response and improved driveability. Finally, on the subject of octane boosting additives, we have a customer running a full race, steel Crossflow with a compression ratio of 11.8:1. He has been racing all year on 95 (yes 95) octane fuel with Millers CVL additive and there have been no detonation problems whatsoever. I fully accept that this does not properly constitute a scientific, controlled experiment, but it is at least a reasonably robust indication that this additive is effective as an octane booster. CVL is specified for racing, but Millers also do a road product called VSP and this was tested at MIRA and shown to be effective. It might be wise to carry some in the car for emergency use. Graham Sewell Posted October 17, 2000 Share Posted October 17, 2000 Jace, Maybe this reply is a little late but your thoughts for your xflow (1995 1600 xflow SE is 3 tanks Super unleaded and then one leaded) are no longer appropriate unless you have access to real leaded 4*. The lead substitute in LRP does not provide the same 'memory' as lead and therefore must be used continually if it is to have an effect. However, as exhaust valve regression is the issue here, and 4* wasn't what it used to be, it is probably as practical to just use unleaded and then slot in hardened valve seats when the exhaust valve seats wear (upto 20,000 miles depending on driving style). I use LRP continually in my 1700 xflow without problem (unless I am in the New Forest and can get leaded in Beaulieu and Burley). For other locations of leaded look at Bayford Thrust or Leaded Petrol. I expect a cylinder head repair in about another 2 years - probably from valve guide wear - and will get hardened seats then.
