  4. Has anyone got a spare or unwanted HPC VX Carbs build manual from '92? Will pay fair (or unfair !) price. 8-) Thanks Dave W

    Int Wiper unit

Has anyone fitted one of Caterham's intermittent wiper unit's to their car? Mine turned up today and I have found out that the fly leads on it have different pins to the loom plug/wiper motor plug. (new unit round plugs/existing leads flat) I rang Caterham and the response was cut the plugs off......hmmph ! I notice that one of the plugs has 5 leads - the other 4 - a blue lead is extra. Whats going on? (and any suggestions as to neatest way to fit it) Thanks Dave

    16" tyres

err... exactly how "dirt cheap" - he said eyeing the remaining tread on his ! smile.gif
  7. It's a 16V VX '92 Carbs. They changed the ECU for a different one when fixing it. This new one has a 9 pin D connector on it (the old one didnt) - whats that for then ?
  8. aaargh 8-) thats two conflicting suggestions..... its in the exact place that chelspeed suggests, (ie LHS, under exhausts, behind alternator) so which is it? speed or oil? why is life never simple? 8-) dave
  9. Just to thank Alex and others who responded with help/trial parts for my non-starting woes a month or so ago. The situation was finally resolved by Caterham picking the car up (no charge - thanks Caterham!) and fixing it themselves. I picked it up a few weeks ago. The moral of this tale is if you don't want a 700+ bill (mine was 1200+ with a 12000 service included), disconnect the battery ! Sob...8-( FYI one little spark at the back of the alternator managed to blow both the ECU and the crankshaft speed sensor....!
  10. rats! is it just an easy unbolt to change it or its gasket? as its leaking oil ... if i remove it am i going to get a deluge of oil everywhere? (just when i thought the car was tip-top !) thx dave
  11. Can someone tell me on a 16V VX Carbs '92 - what is the little gadget screwed into the block just behind the alternator (with a lead coming off it). It looks kinda like a spark plug! 8-) I *think* its the crankshaft speed sensor, and in that function I presume it shouldnt be leaking oil from around its base? Thanks Dave
  12. Wow - what a response ! I spoke to Caterham again today and they have ordered an ECU for me - which will take about 2 wks to get (apparently they are waiting for them from their suppliers), based on that delay , the moths in my wallet and the generous offers made here I would definitely like to take you (thats Glenn - sorry Alex) up on your offer. For a VX on carbs? Yes? If so can you give me a ring to sort out P&P (and P(aying))..... I'm in Southampton. Please call me on 07711 228427 (mobile) or mail me your number (to dave.whitehead@btinternet.com) Edited by - dave w on 27 Oct 2000 08:50:00
  13. no HT at all no spark on main coil ht lead plenty of fuel (can hear fuel pump and smell fuel after attempting start) engine turns over as normal caterham have suggested ignition coil or ignition module i revcd the coil in the post today and have test fitted - no difference (rats !) will ask caterham to send a new ECU - (500 pounds + ouch !!!!) ps its carbs....... 14. i've gone and done a stupid thing... , whilst adjusting fanbelt tension , i removed the leads from the back of my alternator (to get a bit more clearance for a spanner on the lower bolt) and one of the thicker brown leads touched one of the other terminals......(i think the bottom lead touched the next connector up) needless to say there was a convincing spark ! yes - i know - "disconnect the battery first" etc..... 8-( anyway - the car wont start engine turns over fine, no sign of any spark all fuses in the fuse holder are fine (checked with multimeter) all electrical things seem fine....except ignition ! the battery charge warning light (middle red one) is on when the ignition is turned on... so the question is what have I fried, I suppose the list of candidates is a fuse I've misssed (he said hopefully? 8-)) the alternator diode pack (this wouldnt prevnt car starting would it?) the bosch ignition HT module ? the immobiliser (Vecta) - but this seems ok as well can anyone suggest what might have died? its a '92 hpc (vx16v).... thanks dave (with everything crossed)....
  15. in answer to Peter's query re ignition, its electronic, and is the standard factory fit (Caterham that is) - not mucked around with at all....i would like to think that they supply it "mapped" to the Weber's..... 2d, 3d ? i thought they were types of computer graphics card ! 8-) Dave
