Rear wing cutout.

I've noticed the left hand rear wing on the newer Duratec cars, still has the cutout at the bottom, for the older K series exhaust.

Is there a cutout on the right rear wing of the newer cars too?

If not, then I guess it's not needed?

What was it for anyway? Heat from the tailpipe scorching the bottom of the wing? or easy assembly/dissasembly of the can?

Also, are the rear wings for S3 SV and CSR the same width?

Cheers,

Mick. *smile*

Thanks Mick! *thumbup*

Do you know if all the wings have the same width? I know it says they fit all on the on-line shop, but just want to make sure, so I don't make a very expensive mistake!

I just need one for a patern, I'm guessing the right hand side would be the best option, then mirror it for the left.

I could always make a cutout if needed. *wink*

I guess CC'll tell me when I order. *wink*

Guys,

There are to my knowledge 2 type of rear wings available for an S3.

The very old rectangular type used untill 1986 - 1987 (as on my Twin Cam) and a type with a softer profile but I have the suspicion that the width is the same. Both types have the cut-out for the standard rear exit exhaust. Probably Caterham will not sell the old type anymore since they are scared of X-Flow or Twin Cam Sevens. 😬

If you are making your own wings and you do not need the cut-out for a rear exit exhaust, I would mirror them as you say based o the left wing.

Hi Peter, I'm having the wings and nosecone done. I'm dropping the chassis down to Geoff early February. he wants it for six months.

That's why I've bought one wing, and a noscone as a pattern.

He didn't want to do the job without the chassis, as he wants to make it fit good.

I've allways bitched about the quality of the nosecone/bonnet/sideskin interface, so hopefully, now I can do something about it.

I've seen some all ally S3's, and I think they look stunning! But never an SV.

I have a CSR wing I want to show Geoff, and see if he can replicate that in ally too.

Don't ask how much!

I like polishing! *wavey*

HOW much 🤔 🤔 *tongue*

Never mind that! Just think how awesome it will look! Totally unique! And hours of happy polishing!

I look forward to seeing it one day - maybe you need to do a tour of Britain before taking it back to Mallorca!

Thanks Peter.

A lot more than carbon! But no one makes good quality pre-preg, autoclaved carbon for the SV. There are a couple of people doing good carbon, but I'm told there's not enough demand for the SV noscones to justify the price of tooling up.

My last Caterham had the CC carbon, but it was full of pin holes, and developed some wierd markings, and the weave was exposed. Whenever I polished it the black from the carbon would come of onto the cloth. I wouldn't buy it again.

And I hate glassfibre! I guess I'm a fibrehobe after working in the yaching industry for the last 16 years! The famous yacht designer Francis Herreshoff once refered to glassfibre as "frozen snot!". I agree. *tongue*

So I thought what the hell, why not go all ally? I love the look.

The only tour my chassis will be doing is in the back of a van! That's all it is at the moment.

I was going to get the body parts done after it was rolling, but the chassis is in U.K. and I was going to bring it back here in Feb, but after I spoke to Geoff Moss, I decided to get it done while it was still in U.K.

I spoke to Andy Wiltshire first, at Axminster Specialist Panels, but he didn't want to take any more work on for next year! He kindly reffered me to Geoff, who apparently showed Andy the ropes.

There's a nice picture of a full set of ally for a Caterham on Andys website here

Warning pornographic content! *cool*
