X flow alternator problems

Looks like I have the third or maybe fourth problem with my Alternator in about 7 years.

This time appears my WL diode has failed, not getting an ignition light and only time negative side of light connection goes to ground is when ignition is off.

 

Have had various other problems resulting in replacing several alternators over the years, is this common, is it heat related? I have wrapped the pipes to try and reduce this.

 

Or is there something else that I should be doing or another X Flow quirk I am missing not sure which Alternator I have, it's whatever Red Line supply/recommend.

Maybe I've been lucky but I'm still on the same alternator from when I bought my x/flow in 1999. Mind you it has been re-furbed just the once for GBP30. Primaries are wrapped and the alternator is a Valeo which seems to keep the wiring away from the exhaust. Car has covered 43,000 miles since I've had it.

Crumpynut,

 

I had a spell of going through 4 alternators in 2 years! In then had one rebuilt for £30 by a local specialist and it has now gone on for 4 years! he said that it was all down to cheap components from China and that they just needed some care being built!

Hi Nick,

 

I've run the same alternator on my X/Flow now for over 10 years! Prior to that however I got through 2 in about 2 years. My problems were heat related as the rear of the alternator is v close to the exhausts - it effectively cooked the plastic insulation resulting either in poor connection or shorting at the connections. I had to replace that part of the wiring loom and all the connections and invest in a Valeo alternator fm Caterham - from memory appx £70. Prior to that I was using "standard" Escort spec ones which were too long (the Valeo is appx 3/4 the length so the rear is that bit further from the exhaust).
