Exhaust Cat

I'd like to dispense with the Cat/collector and replace it with a 4-1 pipe, putting the cat back at MOT time. However I have a few questions;

 

What does the sensor in the 'cat' measure?

When cat&sensor are removed how does the corresponding lack of signal affect the engine management?

Catalytic converters are sensitive, how are they best stored between MOT's?

Can anyone recomend where to buy an o/s 4-1 stainless pipe for an SV?

Although this is a purely aesthetic exercise can I expect any change in performance/sound?

I shall use the opportunity to polish the primary pipes and the silencer, any tips?

 

Although I really don't like the look of the 'cat', if anyone thinks that removing it is not a good idea (legally/mechanically) I do welcome your opinions.

Martin,

 

1. The exhaust gas compostion.

2. Don't know, but probably best to get a boss welded into the collector you replace the cat with, so that the sensor continues to be part of the system.

3. Cover up the ends ? Perhaps others have a better idea.

4. Do Caterham not flog a replacement pipe, like they do (did ?) for the SLR exhaust ?

5. Probably, but not massive.

6. Polishing: not my thing, if I can avoid it.

7. Legally, it is illegal* to run without the cat on the road, if your car has been SVAed with one. I know of many people who do it though. [Might lead to a discussion on Construction and Use Regs and insurance validity...] Mechanically, no problems that I've heard of.

 

* Though what is actually illegal ? Simply not having the cat fitted, or the car's inability to pass the MOT ? Don't know.

Missed the bit about polishing ...... I used medium grade wire wool and Autosol to get it started, then finished with ultra fine grade (from pine furniture shop) wire wool and Autosol, buffing off with a soft cloth. Brings up primaries and cans a treat

Don't know about other sevens, but on R500's the lambda sensor is not switched on in the ECU. I have no idea why they fitted it, but it clearly did nothing!
