Just the tip of the iceberg sadly. There are plenty of cars out there from 'tacho needle restorations' Some that compete in high level events and are well known cars 😳

As BOSS says way back in the day these were just old racing cars - chassis plates were swapped around, parts, engines...etc were swapped around. Back then the cars weren't the million pound+ investments they are now.

Some of the games Ferrari and others played with car identities for Customs / Carnet are very interesting *wink*

James Dean's Lotus ten springs to mind. He died before taking delivery. Eventually someone got round to restoring the car which by now was a mess. In the restoration process they cut out some of the chassis which was in bad condition. Someone asked to buy the castoffs as scrap metal and, guess what, they built a Lotus ten around it which they successfully auctioned as the James Dean Lotus Ten.

There was an auction by Bonhams at Race Retro, they wanted 20 quid per catalogue to admit two people, after paying 22 quid for the ticket to the show I thought that was taking the p!ss, and so did a lot of other people.
