Terry Field
I often charge my battery in situ, and without disconnecting the leads. I know this is against 'proper' practice, but what are the real risks in doing this? Terry 1700XF - Team Lotus with flares.
CageyH
Pass. I use a conditioner, so my battery is connected. Only dead fish go with the flow....
sjmmarsh
what are the real risks in doing this? Frying the ECU if you get a mains spike... See point 8 here Steve
andy_h
Surely if you have a master cut-off switch (and it's off) this disconnects everything and a mains spike cannot reach/damage the ECU. Sorry for calling you surely 😬 White road legal 2.0 HPC VX race car 😬
Myles
If the BMS is fitted 'properly'... Not all are fitted to kill everything - sometimes to intentionally keep the ECU/immob alive... 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 Alcester Racing 7s Equipe™ 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 Alcester-Racing-Sevens.com
Terry Field
Perhaps I should add that my car is a simple dizzy driven XFlow with no ECU - presumably that makes a difference? Terry 1700XF - Team Lotus with flares.
Old Septimus
In the early days of alternators which had rather fragile diode packs there was a concern that an excessive charger voltage could fry the rectifier. With better regulated chargers and more resilient rectifiers this may not be such a problem now. May be just an old wives' tale but I still disconnect mine if its being charged at more than a couple of amps.
Drumster
Terry, Same situation as you. I've never disconnected my battery. Chris Alston C7CAT 1800 Supersprint Drive it like you stole it! but don't tell my pupils that 😳
MarcNS
I used to disconnect everything on my Xflow but I was using a charger for a Landover oops Now I use a clever charger and no problems to date (crossed fingers)
