Terry Field
Having had an intimate moment with a tyre wall at Brands at the weekend, I need a new clamshell wing. I can buy from CC, but thought about looking for 2nd hand first. I seem to remember a thread which said that new wings come without the bolt holes drilled, so a second hand pair may not have holes which align with the current holes in the chassis. Any advice on this 🤔 Terry 1700XF - Team Lotus with flares.
Bilbo
Hi Terry Depends on the age early ones like mine were a factory fit, I am not sure that it has changed to preset centres I have replaced one, all you need to do is use the old one as a former. I just used use some gaffa tape on the old wing with holes made in it to transfer and drill in the new wing. Just need to make sure that the start points the same as my wing was subtly different in shape to the old one. However, it was not a lot of hassle 'Can you hear me running' ......... OH YES and its music to my ears 😬 😬 😬 1988 200 bhp, 146 ft lbs, 1700cc Cosworth BD? engineered by Roger King, on Weber's with Brooklands and Clamshell wings, Freestyle Motorsport suspension. caterhamnut
The bottom 2 mounts bolt into bushes on the chassis (on our car anyway) so these are fixed - if you still have the old wings, place the 'old' left wing alongside the 'new' right wing, mounting face to mounting face, and mark through the holes. I did this with the bottom 2 points, then mounted the wings onto the front stay - once these were all fitted I simply drilled through wing/side skin from the outside and added a few more bolts. I have not used as many as were there before, and have also avoided rivnuts.
