Ford Type 9 Gearbox Linkage Extension Issue

GaryK

Recommended Posts

I have a 96 Crossflow with a type 9 gearbox (5 speed). The car originally had a 4 speed box but a previous owner changed this. I am assuming the type 9 was slightly shorter as there is a fabricated linkage which is very clunky. I would like to have something mechanically superior so I get better gear changes.

Does any one know of an "off the shelf" solution? Or alternatively, has anyone made anything better?

I have attached pictures to illustrate. Any help would be much appreciated.

No I don't but I think the reach would be OK. However this would mean replacing the tunnel cover as the current cut out would be in the wrong position. Are they available or would I have to get one made?

Hi

As said the 4sp is similar and longer but does the job pretty well. I can't see fully from the pics but it looks like square aluminium blocks that go over the gear lever and between the flat bars are missing. with these the whole set up is probably more rigid. The rubber 'turrets' are also clearly from the plastic discs to the blocks. I'd have thought getting a 4sp set (from Redline?) and redrilling the flat bars at the correct centres would be a simple fix.
